997 turbo high revs on start up
Discussion
Hi all,
Quick question my car has started to go up to 3K rpm when first started in the mornings, been doing this for a few days the car is booked in to be looked at but I need to start and use the car until then.
What I want to know is does a high rev like this constituent to engine damage and or register as over revs?

It can register erroneous over revs in rev range 5 and 6 hence making it difficult to get OPC warranty etc. Porsche deny there's an issue and many OPCs generally fob customers off saying they can't find anything wrong when they know full well there was a service bulletin but its pain for them to rectify. Does not cause any damage to engine and cars fine to use.Quick question my car has started to go up to 3K rpm when first started in the mornings, been doing this for a few days the car is booked in to be looked at but I need to start and use the car until then.

Hi mate,
Thanks for the reply, issue is if my car now has registers revs in ranges 5 & 6 because of this fault it's gonna be hard to sell the car at some point and also as you mentioned to get a warranty, is there anyway that the false rev range recordings can be excluded. This is a bit of a joke TBH and I would have expected better quality from such a 'high end' firm.

The anomalous rr readings are rare. It certainly happened to me and a few other owners and one guy was lucky enough for his car to do it in front of the OPC tech so they now know this can occur. Are they doing your repair as goodwill or warranty fix? Be interesting to see what they do and if this fixes the issue. I put OPC warranty in bin. Thanks for the reply, issue is if my car now has registers revs in ranges 5 & 6 because of this fault it's gonna be hard to sell the car at some point and also as you mentioned to get a warranty, is there anyway that the false rev range recordings can be excluded. They are doing it as warranty fix as it did the high rev thing whist they had the car, so they know about the issue. It's the recorded false rev range info that's bothering me as I don't want to be lumbered with unsellable car.
They'll check the over revs etc when your car goes in. As long as you have no RR 5 or 6 you're fine. I've heard a rumour that Porsche now refuse warranty on cars with RR 4 but its only a rumour but if its true its ridiculous, bing said:

Why would 3k revs cause engine damage and an over Rev reading !Quick question my car has started to go up to 3K rpm when first started in the mornings, been doing this for a few days the car is booked in to be looked at but I need to start and use the car until then.

People are st scared of this over Rev recording but alass don,t understand it sadly.
Prob just a sensor causing revs to creep on start and prob an easy fix.
But quoting 3k as high revs and quoting over revs reading is scary to read on a forum esp the posts after talking about Rev ranges 5 and 6 lol

Again relax and stop slagging off Porsche, your car is not over reving and will have not recorded ranged in 5 and 6 lol Thanks for the reply, issue is if my car now has registers revs in ranges 5 & 6 because of this fault it's gonna be hard to sell the car at some point and also as you mentioned to get a warranty, is there anyway that the false rev range recordings can be excluded. I doubt it, this op issue just sounds like a sensor, it's not really a Rev flare if it's only going to 3k !
Its very hard start up and happens so quickly all you see is the rev needle going past 3k. Not sure how far past it goes as it happens so unexpectedly and timing is random. Yes it is a misaligned sensor but you need to take the gearbox out to get at it hence OPC reluctance to fix the issue.Gassing Station | 911/Carrera GT | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
