The idea of a naturally aspirated rear wheel drive car that revs to 9000 rpm mated to a manual gear box makes me rather more excited than it should do...for whatever reason I didn't want a PDK car....to the extent that told my OPC I only wanted a .2 if it was manual.

I am about to get Macan Turbo PP as a daily though....which obviously has a PDK gearbox. And my wife's Boxster is PDK.
So we're equal opportunity employers smile

Now now D! I'm guessing you've never played golf. To play it well it requires a lot of skill and imagination and is extremely satisfying when you play a good shot. So not a good analogy IMO! wink

FWIW : Manual vs. PDK debate :

No right or wrong here.

For me personally, for road use, I prefer my manual 991.2 GT3 to my old 991.1 RS ; not just a little bit , but by a huge amount - I think the 991.2 GT3 Manual is the most brilliant road car - it’s such a great package ; the PDK RS was a technical masterpiece and is made for the track but, in truth, it just didn’t do it for me (for what I wanted it for)

Good we are all different.

As I say , no right or wrong in this , just MHO.

The RS plays on it's down force and PDK to give the track times. But really there is nothing like pressing a clutch and shifting that gear stick, daft as it may sound, nothing comes close to doing it yourself.
The thing is I tend to look at the 'fun' factor when driving, I agree 'involvement' is a major factor but operating a clutch and gear lever is not the complete story for me anyway.
Maybe because my skill levels are lower than most but I get great enjoyment from operating the PDK in manual mode with choice of paddles or moving the lever, and being able to concentrate more on my braking and lines through a corner.
I've never thought while out for a good blast with PDK I wish I'd taken the manual, or vice versa for that matter, I really do have great fun in both.
Big Plus 1 . PDK for me.

The issue is that the claim was made that only a manual is involving to drive. The exact quote 'no matter what any one says, if you want an involving sports car you want a manual'

For some people, clearly the manual box is the be all end all. For a lot of others, it simply isn't even if it is less involving as other factors come in.

Also, how posted the link about a tuner being able to retrofit/map the earlier GT cars to flat shift like the 991.2'3?

For me, driving a fast car is or should be a very physical experience and this is why I get far more satisfaction from a manual. Changing gear smoothly and timely is a real skill as is heal and toe. To say otherwise is just stupid. Then there's the tactility. You feel a deep mechanical connection with the car. You feel its soul.

I totally get why some prefer PDK and I'm debating this with a friend who is buying his first Porsche. He wants PDK as one reason is he's impressed by the technology. But then he's a techie!

So whichever we prefer, Porsche have given us the opportunity to buy both. They should be commended as their competitors are just not giving us the choice.

And I strongly disagree that manual doesn't suit the modern tech in these cars. Actually I think the manual combined with the tech on my GT3, and that engine, is a sensational match.

Thank you Porsche and keep it up!

No dispute 991 GT3 with either gearbox is hard to beat as package at the money for both road and track use.

Mentioned before imo the 991.2 GT3 clutch is too light for a Porsche GT. BUT the upside is the car is much more usable in traffic.

From then on, every 200 kilometres, we up the rpms by 500, so we end up at 1300, 1400 kilometres at the threshold before we can really go full throttle, at 800 or 900 miles”

He then went on that this procedure was really important for the GT3 RS engines given their more "delicate" rings - and how important this break in really is for any of their engines.

Another point - he recommended to realign the car after 1000-1500 miles due to settling - especially since the tires are getting bigger and bigger, and more sensitive to changes. The RS apparently is really sensitive around this."

This seems to be less conservative than the method quoted above.
That looks like the correct transcript from the AP interview. It’s on you tube if you want to see it.

I don’t have the owners manual to hand but there is definitely a section on running in. From what I can remember, it is very generic and is common to all Porsche’s i.e. not GT3 specific and suggests limiting revs for 1800 miles.
This is what is on page 12 of my GT2RS / GT3 UK driver’s manual. Very clearly states “required” rather than hints / suggested but there seems to be conflicting practice and viewpoints from Porsche themselves.

Not quite, his is more expressed as opinion, rather than fact.

His statement that heel/toe is a skill is true, so to say otherwise is stupid... that's correct and factual.

Not everyone is interested in gaining that skill.

I'm happy to admit I suck at heel/toe... but on the other hand... I quite enjoy playing with the slide created in my Caterham when I get it wrong and lockup the rear wheels.

For me, the personal preference with the GT3, is that the latest variant of the GT3 PDK makes me feel like I'm driving a race car every day... and I ****ing love that feeling. A manual... just doesn't do it for me like that.

IMHO Heel and Toe is like doube de clutching, you use it if you need to. Otherwise take it and drive it as it is.

So to clarify, I was expressing an opinion about my preference for manual over PDK.

I'm not calling anyone stupid, however the factual element to my post was about the skill involved with a manual gear change. It was suggested there is no skill to this. As driving itself is a learned skill then it follows that changing gear is part of that skill. My girlfriend has never mastered it and will only drive automatics.

Home sweet home. 300 miles on the clock. Another 500 going on this weekend for the NC500.
The manual is old school and just brilliant. My previous GTS was PDK which was also brilliant, but the GT3 is just more of an event to drive than the GTS - and should be even more so as the revs go up.
I gave it the first wash last night, then stood back in admiration. I was just taken a back that I actually now own one of these mythical beasts. I feel very honoured and privileged. Drive safely guys and enjoy your amazing car...be it pdk or manual.
