So this is the reply I had back today - what do you think?

"In answer to your question regarding the gear lever moving under acceleration and deceleration I am aware, and is not a fault and quite normal operating condition for this transmission.

The 991 GT3 Gen 2 manual transmission has been designed to have a very direct shifting connection. Therefore elimination of damping components within the gearbox have been reduced, the resulting construction of the shift mechanism contributes to 4th gear having the most visible display.

After consultation with Porsche the movement in 4th gear is found to be within PAG tolerances.

I hope this explains and addresses your concerns."

Very interesting and in contradiction to what I was told. My new box however has not solved the problem, it has reduced it, but there is still noticeable movement. Strange how much their tone has changed since I first reported my issue. I’m still not sure whether I’m convinced but just happy to be back driving it now.

Thanks for posting their reply beer

My first time round Spa... best lap I got on video was a 2m48s... according to chrono I managed a 2m45s earlier with no traffic but have no proof.

Not bad for a first outing... next time I'll take the racelogic and get more video smile

Thanks.

Just for the record I have not experienced this issue with any other Porsche...GT or otherwise.

On numbers it looks like for the UK there are around 150 manual cars split equally between Touring (50), Clubsport/ buckets non cage(50) and comfort specs (50). thumbup

Thanks for posting.

Interesting that Porsche refer to the direct shifting connection of the gearbox but it is if anything less direct than the gearboxes on the 981 GT4 and 981 Spyder which showed no excessive gearlever movement in either third or fourth.

I am meeting up with a pal in the next few weeks who has a similar build date car which he says shows similar characteristics by which time I should hopefully have heard more from my OPC via PGB.

Will let you know. thumbup

Makes sense to me. Tolerance stack up of the gearshift mechanism inside the gearbox means that some movement at the gear lever is possible in some cases. Unless it actually jumps out of gear, is it really of any concern..?

I can see a warranty claim here, the stitching doesn't line up on the leather column cowl between the two pieces smile

Very tidy lap considering your first time at Spa. Such a fantastic circuit, one of the best!

Interesting that your new box still has it, all be it reduced. Maybe it is a design characteristic afterall...

Pretty decent show for a first visit, lovely weather and v quiet. You can carry a lot more speed thru the double apex left Pouhon and generally there is plenty of speed to be found in the last 3rd of your lap. What a car, awesome !

Thanks.

It's an interesting response from my OPC and to me reads like something official from Porsche themselves.

If they designed into it reduced damping to create a direct shift then why didn't my 996 GT3 have it? That gearbox, as I recall, was straight from the GT1 race cars of the period.

It is of concern if it is a fault. And ultimately that's what we want to get to the bottom of. It may be that the official Porsche line is the correct one. Equally they may be trying to deflect the potentially huge cost of replacing X number of manual gearboxes under warranty.

We will see.

I think so, mine does it as well ( in 4th only ), i’ll monitor it but I don’t think it’s cause for concern.

Spoke to a couple of friends with manual cars who display the same symptom. They contacted their dealers (one London, one Midlands) and they got exactly the same response (to the letter) from the dealers. Interesting that it says “within tolerance” when they didn’t even inspect the car!

Porsche are obviously getting a few queries (probably fuelled by forums like this) and have a standard response. Probably with flagging it with the dealer so it is on record and then seeing how it goes. Doesn’t seem like a big issue and only really noticeable if you go looking for it but sensible to be cautious.

Yes I held back a bit on that one because I don’t like getting too close to other cars on track days in case they make an error.

I got passed the RS on the next lap but then got stuck in traffic so the lap ended up 1-2s slower and then that was the last lap of the day.

Corner I kept messing up was the long tight downhill right hairpin.

Bruxelles, yes it’s tricky. Late brake and turn in, seems to work best, but easy to get frustrated with this corner. I’ll be there at the next RMA day in May, can’t wait, my favourite circuit.
