My 1998 car ticked or ticks. I don't drive it now as it is has no MOT. It will return ... one day ... hopefully soon. Mine sometimes ticked at start up. And it also could tick sometimes after a run or even during. I didn't really know what to do about it so just ignored it and carried on.

I don't have much faith in dealerships and their warranties. You could of course pursue this avenue. Most warranties will not cover the cost of a proper rebuild. They may cover the cost of a smaller rebuild or repair - not sure. I'd say everything I've read talks about the ticking being from the tappets. I even saw a YouTube from a [relatively] famous YouTuber who bought a 996 c4s. He showed it once idling and you could hear it ticking. He didn't seem bothered but that's just 1 example I guess. He had just collected it or was collecting it from a specialist so I'm assuming if it was a problem perhaps they would have made more of a fuss about it.

It's your car and you need to decide. If it is going to bother you then you need to pursue the warranty route. But if that makes you feel worse about the car then it could be a double edged sword.

How are you finding the car otherwise?

Ticking on start up when left stood for a while seems to be fairly standard. Mine doesn't tick once it's warm though, the only time it did was shortly before the water pump gave up the ghost.

I ran some Wynns hydraulic valve lifter treatment in mine before an oil change on the off chance that it would clear some blockages and it has worked. Mine is much quieter now with very little if any ticking noises at idle regardless of engine temperature.

I had an occasional timing chain rattle on cold starts in mine. A change of oil to 10w50 pretty much cured it.

Engine has >225k miles and still pulls through 140 leptons with

Porsche recommends a 5w50 for 996’s now.

£400 for booster red. I guess colouring the carpet wouldn't be too tricky but it is bloody expensive. If anyone is feeling public spirited and can lend me one I've recently got myself a 3d scanner and am a design engineer when I'm not posting on pistonheads so am confident I could knock something up that would be suitable for manufacture on a 3d printer.
They also have this carbon version from Rennline for only 700

Thanks all for your assuring responses RE ticking.

I am not interested in pursuing a warranty as aside from this the car is very good and enjoying ownership.

800 is crazy money. Surely the after market should come to the rescue here. Lots of margin available for some cottage industry types to pop up. If I do get one I'd be tempted to deconstruct it and see about making some looky likeys.
I can get a small batch run on a 3D printed version if anyone is interested?

Price is still nearly £300 each but you can fit mag-charger to it or AirTag with a bit of extra work. Minimum order is 3.

Hi all, I am looking for a second opinion on an issue with my 1998 3.4 C2 996.

I purchased it in Autumn last year from a specialist dealership & cost almost £20k so at the higher end of the market. I found the advert for the car on this thread! Four months later (February) I have noticed the engine is ticking/tapping but only at hot idle. It doesn't always tick, but it happens often enough to be noticeable. I swapped to Millers Oil which is sometimes a known solution but this did not remedy.

The car did come with a 3 month warranty and this issue has been identified to the dealer outside of this period albeit only by a few weeks. They have offered zero help and been quite dismissive of the issue.

I am not overly concerned as many early 996 tick, and I will keep driving and enjoying the car regardless. However I would perhaps have expected the dealer to stand by their cars a bit more and be more amenable in offering to help resolve the issue (they have offered to look at the car in early May.. lol). I am not expecting them to remedy a solution for free but ideally we would have worked together to get to a point where we are both happy.

Am I overly concerning myself with this, or should we expect the dealer to be more amenable in helping fix a car sold only 4 months ago?
My experience; brought a 1999 C4 Tip coupe Sep 2021, 148K miles, used as my daily, now on 173K. Been ticking for a year. I knew (thought) it was probably bored scored. Bit smokey out of NS exhaust. Ignored it. Serviced recently. spark plug showed obvious issue...borescope confirmed. Needs rebuild. Goes in next week. Hugely expensive business. Sorry.

What's the mileage. It could well be a lifter, these are known to get sticky. Certainly worth a bore scope but a 3.4 doesn't tend to suffer so much. If you do need to change a lifter get the variocam guides changed too, these will be past their best.

Just been browsing some of the pics here looking at common details between the cup car and our shopping cars.

https://carhuna.com/auctions/vehicle/1999-porsche-...

I thought this was interesting. Even with a [I'm assuming] different tank and battery and fuel pump setup they appear to still use the standard battery tray.

Massively over priced and with 1,500 miles total in past 3 years just before the magic 100k milestone, I'd be checking that mileage very carefully.
