Thanks - it's really well done (insofar as I can qualify the work of a paintshop).

This is what started it all - note lack of corrosion and (now!) gaskets:

Did you manage to keep the chassis number sticker? They are £££ for a replacement. Often they are endangered by the rust in that area / the need to blend in the paint.

Nope, however I ordered some, erm, "homage" VIN stickers from Carbone-pl, which were $30/ea rather than £400/ea.

In case anyone is interested here's a collection of photographs from the bodywork and paint - Barry keeps adding more to his Facebook page, as he does so I add them to this album: https://www.flickr.com/photos/8131181@N05/sets/721...

Help

I have or have had some form of clutch, gearbox or gearbox mount failure. I noticed at some traffic lights I could not find first. It was there but a bit further forward than I could get the lever. Then when pulling off in 2nd there was some juddering. Also while moving in 2nd at say 2000 revs if i press and then release the throttle the lever moves around 2 inches forward and then back again and yo yos around with engine load. Then when i went to park i put it into reverse and it sort of jumped out and into 1st once i started moving - not sure - the effect i noticed was like someone pressing the brake abruptly but only the back wheels so it felt like the back of the car lifted in sympathy.

Video - ok maybe its not 2 inches but its not insignificant.

Any ideas?

Not pinion bearing - that just whines (like a supercharger when it gets really bad).

Worst case it's gearbox internals, but mine didn't do that when it pretty much eventually disintegrated.

I have or had a bit of a whine in 5th and 6th.

That's how the pinion bearing sounds when it starts to go... a feint whine in 5th/6th gear as you come on and off part throttle... it's most noticeable in 6th on the motorway, when you slow to c.50-60, then pick up part throttle to hold the speed. It goes away with increased throttle travel and more revs. As the bearing deteriorates the whine volume increases and spreads down the gears and up the rev range.

But a failing pinion bearing won't cause the gear stick issues you have.

So when do you change a whining pinion bearing and what's involved?

Mine got progressively worse over 50k miles, but it was the gearbox that precipitated the repair. The bearing whine is nothing more than an annoyance, the main downside is the metal bits that come off it circulating in the gearbox and causing further damage.

I had a full gearbox and diff rebuild in the end.

Sports & Classic quote c.£1,350 for the pinion bearing repair on its own (I assume + vat).

What about fitting an LSD. Would that negate the need to have pinion bearings?

I don't think so... as I understand it, you can put a LSD in it, but you still need the pinion bearing.

Pinion bearing is noisy on mine - it's on the list of jobs that are chucked into the future at the moment. Spotted the sport classic rebuild service, so intend to use that, plus do the clutch at the same time - maybe in a year or so. Gives it that touring car feel for the moment!

Loving the PilotSport4s so far - car is transformed on them. All the steering judders have gone as well - it's much cleaner, albeit the steering still feels so floaty once you get up to the ton ... the suspension is all good, the alignment is good, so either it's just They All Do That Sir, or what I'm feeling is steering rods etc having 90K miles on them. Nothing urgent at any rate, just chuffed as to the grip, feel and comfort of the PS4s.

Also took my car to a local bodyshop today for an estimate. I have a bit of rust in the offside wheel-arch that I want to catch, a few marks on the paint to sort, and also want him to do both the door catches as per-above - they are rusty on the outsides of the catch and it's not expensive to get them done. Waiting for quote ....

I really, really want to sort out all the window seals as the car is noisy as hell at speed. Main one is the windscreen, which is knackered on one side, but the passenger door is pretty noisy as well.

I think I remember reading about horror stories for the price of seals - anyone got any insight into cost? If I knew a local auto windscreen place I'd ask them to replace the windscreen seals, but we don't have anyone anymore ....

Front screen seal is £35 on Design 911.... a door seal is £200 a side.

AH cheers - it must have been the doors that scared me!

How hard is it to fit seals and actually get them right? Best taking the car to somewhere that does accident repairs?

Just thinking - if car is going for paint, might get them to do it whilst they're in there ...

I'm not sure if any of you know, but I've been arranging breakfast clubs meets around the South of England. I've pulled a bit of a blinder for May, so I hope you don't need to be registered to see this link

Let me know if you read it without being a member, and let me know if anyone fancies coming along and wants a run up the hill biggrin

Quick copy and paste

So after cancelling the March meet due to the snow, the May meet is back with a bit of a bang biggrin

I've been talking to Brooklands Museum and they've allowed us to piggy back on to the Spring Classic Breakfast on the 20th of May. They'll allocate a space for up to 50 cars for us inside the venue, but we do need to confirm numbers nearer the time. In addition to this, they'll allocate maybe 10 slots for those that would like to compete on the hillclimb driving

Entry is £14.50 for adults, and kids are £5.50. The price includes entry to the museum, and probably more importantly breakfast! We would need to be on site by 9.30.

Could I have some names of people that are interested in attending, and pop a HC in brackets next to your name if you want to compete on the hillclimb.

More info on the event can be found here www.brooklandsmuseum.com/whats-on/spring-classic-b...
