The pinion bearing isn't that hard of a job.

It is an FAG brand part and can be had for under £120

You need a decent sized press and to support the hollow shaft (if a C2, C4s are solid) internally when pressing / pulling the bits off.

I have had quotes of £400 no vat to replace it (box removed already). The box isn't that hard to get out, just awkward.

Obviously other bearings are in there, and if these are done too they will need replaced, not all are available aftermarket, some may be Porsche only.

So after cancelling the March meet due to the snow, the May meet is back with a bit of a bang biggrin

I've been talking to Brooklands Museum and they've allowed us to piggy back on to the Spring Classic Breakfast on the 20th of May. They'll allocate a space for up to 50 cars for us inside the venue, but we do need to confirm numbers nearer the time. In addition to this, they'll allocate maybe 10 slots for those that would like to compete on the hillclimb driving

Entry is £14.50 for adults, and kids are £5.50. The price includes entry to the museum, and probably more importantly breakfast! We would need to be on site by 9.30.

Could I have some names of people that are interested in attending, and pop a HC in brackets next to your name if you want to compete on the hillclimb.

More info on the event can be found here www.brooklandsmuseum.com/whats-on/spring-classic-b...
I live 5 mins away from (and work next door to) the Brooklands Museum... I'm in.

You need access to a 40T press.

Just FYI Brooklands will normally quite happily give you club stand space for nothing for their regular calendar events if the car profile fits their event theme. You could plan in a handful through the year.

Well some people have been managing just fine with a 20T press, but as always better to be prepared as they sometimes take more pressure.

Back to gearboxes, my 1st gear syncro ring self destructed and when driving to the garage for its replacement (quiet times chosen with no 1st gear!), the gearbox started to whine for the first time at A road / Motorway speeds. Maybe some of the broken parts internally started to cause this.

I concluded that probably my best, cheapest option was to swap the box with a low mileage secondhand unit from Germany and I've been very happy with that decision as it limited the time and the cost of the fix and all round feels like a box with 90,000 fewer miles on it. Unless you do a very thorough, very expensive refresh, there is a danger that it will soon break again... At the moment there are a few, in some cases very low mileage boxes available in Germany for very good prices from seemingly pretty honest sellers.

Where would you source such a box - ebay Germany?

I do agree that fixing one thing on a 90K box isnt going to save you from the rest of the wear inside it!

Yes, ebay.de is the easiest place. I found a Porsche / Maserati specialist breaker on there to be very easy to deal with. He still has a very low mileage 996.2 box than can also be used on a 996.1 with 996.2 shift cables that I suspect he would take €2000 plus €150 postage for.

Here you go - I think this is the one Jon was talking about

https://www.ebay.de/itm/Porsche-911-996-Getriebe-G...

Good luck - can't be nice needing a box. I have the leisure of time at least ...

That looks pretty decent deal... around half the price of a full 'box/diff rebuild at a specialist.

Yep, plus possibly you are reducing the risk of the specialist not rebuilding it as well as factory assembled and leading to a different failure down the road.

He took €2000 for mine so is willing to negotiate. I felt it was probably cheaper than only repairing 1st gear on mine and in practice on 144k it seemed likely it would need a lot more work! I still have the old box in my garage should I ever choose to rebuild it or sell it.

You'll still be charged the £14.50 entrance fee that includes breakfast for this one though smile
