what is an 'early' 3.4 996?

Sort the steering wheel and wheels out and that would look super nice... great exterior colour!
I actually have a spare four spoke black airbag and steering wheel in my loft having changed for a far nicer 3 spoke. The wheels will be slightly more painful to replace I suspect... Smollet said:

Service history's a bit sketchy; no wonder it needed an engine rebuild! Wonder who did that; and what, exactly.
If you check out the seller it appears they have some involvement with boxster race cars so they probably did the work themselves. Surely service history is less relevant if the car has a rebuilt enfine and fresh paint.https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Porsche-911-996-3-4-Ltr...
I'd suggest that they may know what they're doing.

I’ve emailed you at work assuming there aren’t too many Leigh Ws in Leistershire who count beans! If it’s not you then apologies!

I like the new look, I might get the wheels repainted at a later date not sure yet.
It's lowered on H7R cup springs and Koni dampers, it's quite low but not too harsh
But your new OZ Alleggeritas look great as well!
What size and offset are these? I really like your height/stance.
And how much do they weight compared to the Carrera III?
Oh, and what tires are you running?
IMHO they would look better in a darker tone. Not to dark bit, slightly less silver than you have now.

I'm running 245/40 and 295/30 Contis, and agree about the colour. I was thinking about getting them painted later in the year, may be a dull gold or antique bronze colour?
I've not weighed them, but they're a lot lighter than the Carrera III wheels that came off
So I'm down to a choice of two on the shortlist. The search for a manual 3.4 cable throttle with aero and M030 and LSD and black leather was fruitless - ended up at a 3.6 with no aero
Candidate 1:
2003 car
90k
Atlas grey
Black leather
Pros - hardbacks, Dansk exhaust, new disks and pads and condensers and brake lines. Turbo style wheels (my fave 996 OEM wheel) BOSE,
Condition of this car is outstanding
Cons - 8 owners, at the very top of the budget, is it too clean for an everyday car with the nipper in and out etc
Candidate 2:
2002 car
90K
Black on Black
Pros: 1 owner, full stamped Porsche history and one specialist who are the seller too. 4 grand cheaper than the Atlas car
Cons: No hardback seats, standard exhaust, nowhere near as clean, has the 5 spoke Carrera alloys (yack), unsure of any evidence of remedial work such as clutch, condensers etc etc, needs a windscreen to due chip/crack (which I may be able to get under insurance later)
So I'm at a crossroads - 4 grand is a lot of money and pays for hardbacks and a Gundo hack on the exhaust and puts more into the borkage fund. One owner and the history is a draw, however the Atlas Grey is so so very clean and tidy and wont need a penny spending (hopefully) for a while
What say you Porsche gurus?

My experience of running a 3.4 from 57k to 170k is, unless you really know what you're looking at, get a proper independent inspection on either of them.
Sounds like they have both been well maintained on the face of it, but there are all sorts of things that 'expire' around 100k miles... some of the work I had done over that period included... suspension components (coffin arms), wheel bearings, rads, AOS, waterpump, fuel pump, clutch (plus DMS if needed)... plus mine also had a full gearbox/diff rebuild.
As an example... You need someone who knows what a pinion bearing sounds like when it 1st starts to go.
I'd also want the bores scoping on a 3.6.

Thanks for the pointers so far, these are the cars in question:

Would you still have an inspection done with them coming from a dealer? Especially Northway who are so well regarded on the Porsche world

Pinion bearing is easy surely - high pitched road speed related whine!
Mine is starting to sound like it’s got straight cut gears .....
Echo the advice above on an inspection and wanting to see the bill of works, not just the stamps
Easy to know when it's fully knackered, but unless you know what you're listening for, it's very hard to hear the initial fault.Mine is starting to sound like it’s got straight cut gears .....
