what is an 'early' 3.4 996?

My seller's diy rebuild (which the jury is out on) didn't cover the bores at all. The reasoning being that they were not outside of Porsche spec. Are steel liners a no - and does the engine come with liners or is this a repair which has been engineered to save a block outside of spec?That buyer also mentions this;
"It’s also fitted with a low temp thermostat coupled with a manual fan over-ride switch"
Wondering where the hell did they put that switch? Really would want to include that into my 986 along with oil temperature sensor.
Love this 993 oil cooler fan switch (After-market)!
I agree with the open-deck discussion though, my indy-technician gave me a very long lecture about it last year. Porsche and some rebuilders out there claiming that it's good for the cooling (open-deck) but basically, they were being cheap in terms of manufacturing. Apparently, the closed-deck engine, physically is a much more reliable system.

Given all the work that's been done, looks good valueI am only posting this because sometimes it is nice for a good car to pass from enthusiast to enthusiast - I sold my e61 550i after responding to the OP of a Pistonheads thread enquiring about the same. I am not doing it to circumvent any rules regarding advertising etc.
If anyone is seriously looking at one of these, and doesn't mind a tiptronic, and is prepared to overlook mileage and proceed on condition alone I know of what I believe to be a bit of an opportunity. It is a 1998 3.4 tiptronic c2 coupe with switchable PSE. One owner from new and receipts for maintenance and general upkeep totalling £100k. Yes, really. The owner has put 750k on Porsches since 1981. This particular vehicle has done 208k of those.
It is not currently for sale but it will have to be sold. I was originally in the frame to buy it - and would have done so without hesitation - but for two things: firstly, I want a manual and couldn't compromise on that and secondly, I felt uncomfortable taking advantage of my friend's circumstances. In truth I was hoping he wouldn't sell it - but he confirmed yesterday he thought he would have to.
My reason for posting this is simply that I would like, if possible, to spare him the ebay / autotrader humiliation of having to bat away silly offers and timewasters. His car is more museum piece than giveaway banger. If anyone is seriously interested please feel free to PM me.
The reason I am perusing these threads by the way is I did indeed find a manual car - in fact, a 3.6 c2 coupe - which I am picking up on Saturday!! Cant wait!!

It is so good that I had to buy it. An absolute peach of a car.
Good choice, looks lovely! I'm still browsing the ads myself, but still a few weeks from having the funds to make a purchase, so only window shopping.
Interestingly FGP still have the silver GT3 kitted car for sale despite selling the other 996s that they had at the same time,. Has anyone viewed it? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PORSCHE-911-996-CARRERA-... They've dropped the price a little. Perhaps the sketchy service history is the sticking point, despite the recent work that's been done on the car?

I've not seen the car but without cast iron history I'd be passing on that unless it is cheap, especially with those miles.I'm still browsing the ads myself, but still a few weeks from having the funds to make a purchase, so only window shopping.

Colours?As for leather - although I have been in it, I don't recall - not black or tan or particularly offensive so I suspect grey.
If required, I can obviously find out both for certain.

They seem to price their cars a little bit high and then lower the price a bit and then go for an auction.I'm still browsing the ads myself, but still a few weeks from having the funds to make a purchase, so only window shopping.
