We're talking about the car. FWIW. In 2016 better options were available, known and well out in the public domain. There are numerous threads and resources via a quick google.
If nothing else it's a known quantity.
Sure some well forum read people know about it but there are many more that don't. If you are an average Joe and presented with options many go with the Porsche 'approved' and safe option. It may not be the best but it gives the most reassurance for many. You've only got to look at the dozens of threads on N rated tyres, what will or won't satisfy the warranty etc. If nothing else it's a known quantity.

First hit - Hartech.
Doubt that was different at any time during the last 3 years+
Anyway, I'm sure there are good reasons. It is what it is.

What's the difference with x51 in the block department on the 3.4?
I know the sump pan is different and then I thought it was heads and cams.
"The 3.4 x51 kit came with different pistons, also cams, heads, intake, headers, oil pan, and a double scavenge pump on bank 2 head."I know the sump pan is different and then I thought it was heads and cams.
The 3.6 and 3.8 x51 short block is no different apparently.
I couldn't find a part number and price for the non-x51 3.4 short block on a quick google, but your local OPC should be helpful.
