Just to carry on gushing - for the people reading who have never driven one - the feedback through the steering wheel and your bum is immense. Initial turn in feels a little light or unwilling but a slight lift of the throttle and the front tightens. You find you can adjust the rotation with slight adjustments of the throttle and this is all at sane speeds. If you go even quicker it's more of the same but the point is you can enjoy the feel of the car at sensible speeds. Yes if you want to go quick you can go quick too. If you turn the wheel quick enough it will throw you out of the seat - even in the wet. My car isn't standard so I don't know how much different mine is but the tyres on mine are 5 or 6 year old Michelin with good tread so nothing spectacular but have been sat around in someone's garage for years and years without being used. The feeling of weight shifting around at the back is always there. So you point it at a bend and the adjust to kind of feel for the back to get into the right angle to point the car where you want to go. Then you can start to apply throttle and it will maintain the angle. I enjoy setting up this angle early and then trying to continue without an adjustment mid bend. Now please understand i am a very very average driver at best. But I enjoy driiving this car more than any I have ever driven. Maybe I talk a good story or maybe it is that good. Buy one and decide for yourself.
Glad you put that in writing. It's something that doesn't come to you immediately if you jump from hot hatches or something like a 350z. I used to liken the 350z to a hammer, the 996 is a scalpel. It really doesn't matter if you arrive home later.nebpor said:
Standard is fine for the real world. It's more than fine actually, it's still bonkers good.

Can’t comment on price cos obviously it’ll depends on mileage and condition, but X51 man! I would love to drive it back to back comparing it to mine (3.4 C2).
Sadly koni FSD dont make dampers for my 996 C4. So I'm probably going to go bilstein b6 and maybe eibach for a slight lower or maybe just standard.
Can't go lower around here and don't want to go stiffer. Whole reason i got the porsche over a hot hatch is that i wanted a sports car with a decent ride.

Without wanting to start the debate it's a C4 so is compromised
As you say it's the only 996 you've driven, so I am not sure why you think it is compromised? Perhaps its the chassis shared with the GT3, or the all year round capability, or the slightly better steering feel?As has been said an X51 996.1 is a very rare car in 2 or 4 wheel drive format.

It was a tongue in cheek response to the ‘ultimate 996?’ question!!
I’m sure you’ll agree though that there’s lots of nonsense all over various forums and groups regarding C2 v C4.
Each to their own.

Yes 100%, I can agree to arguments over tip v manual, or cab v coupe but C2 vC4 nope far to close to call.Is anyone honestly saying that if the wanted a 3.4 C2 manual coupe & an immaculately serviced C4 coupe came up they'd walk away.

Sorry. I thought the ‘argue’ smiley might have given away the sarcasm. I don’t think it’s compromised in the slightest.

Apologies missed that - you are absolutely right! Makes me laugh as so many people harp on about the C4S being great, and the Golf R being so much better with 4 wheel drive, etc, etc...It was a tongue in cheek response to the ‘ultimate 996?’ question!!

Middle aged men have been having the C2 vs C4 debate since the 964 C4 was launched in 1989 when it was of course sacrilege that a Porsche should have 4 wheel drive (conveniently forgetting the 959 of course, or the four wheel drive 3.2 engined "hybrid" 959 that won Dakar...)
I am jealous of your X51!

I believe some people don't even bother looking if it is a C4, because the various forums have convinced them of the "purity" of the C2! Perhaps they should drive one first or read the contemporary road tests instead.Edited by Fastlane on Saturday 26th May 15:40
