Have you had or driven any Porsches?
nope to both........ never driven nor owned one..... for me (as many here) its just one of those cars i feel i'd like to own.... most folk tell me the M3 is better in terms of reliability/cost to maintain... and even drive, but for me its more to experience/own one.

i don't care if the 996 is x slower to 60 etc. or would/wouldn't be faster from x-y over different road types.. i know the porsche is more of a compromise seating wise (kids) but its an occasional car for them - and they are small (girls both under 9 and small for age)

the M3 is just a 3 series at the end of day..... if mine was a vanilla coupe i'd sell it in a heartbeat as i could replace it handy enough, my problem is with mine being 4 door, immaculate, (manual - i like stick shift) and happens to have a full evolve system on it (sounds absolutely beyond sublime) i know it would be very hard to get another one......... if i sold it.. and wanted to get back into one.

the porsche is just that bit special.... i do still look back at the M3 when i park it up... the Porsche i think i woudl look back maybe twice :-)

for pure raw driving experience/track work etc i have a race car anyway... so out and out performance for me is not so important... its more dynamics, feel, sound, soul, looks..........

that's a negative for me in many ways...... and one of the reasons I'm not sure i want to sell the M3.

i can provoke the M3 into throwing its tail out... I don't tend to much.. but do like feeling it squirm/move under me a bit, i also like how the chassis actually gives you feel, and you do actually have to respect the throttle.

BUT...... like i say, i woudl not be buying the porsche purely for driving pleasure/feel........ its more the complete ownership, maybe a box tick if i'm honest... and the look of course

thanks guys..... appreciate it.

yes, i do sense the 'feel' of the 996 woudl suit me....... I'm not interested in travelling at warp speed. i want feel, rather than stupid speed... i guess i want the Ducati S4 monster rather than a GSXR1000 in terms of comparison to bikes.

i test drive an M5 before i bought the M3, and didn't like that at all....... fast (esp in a straight line) but zero feel, no soul... wasn't my thing at all.. i also test drive an RS4, great car, but didn't excite me driving it

After a few beers last night.... and in an effort to justify to myself let alone wifey why I should look to keep the M3 and 911, I came up with the idea of buying a convertible 996.... previously wouldn't have considered one... but at least that way I can sort of justify it to myself - as they are both totally different cars...

Convertible for a bit of craic in the summer, M3 as the 'sensible' 4 door car for general use..

I don't think I'd consider a category car... but this is tempting.. and local!

Do you need the 'four' (I say in quotes for obvious reasons) seats?

If definitely no, get a Boxster. They're a much, much more accomplished convertible.

Yea... Defo want/need 4 seats... Kids are only 7/8 and very petite.. So I'd want a car for us all to get out at the wk end for at least the next 5++ years.. And they are unlikely to be tall - so will 'always' likely to fit into the rear - even though the seats/leg space is less vs. Coupe

I think you are right.... Would be interesting to know exactly what damage was done, and whether there is good photographic evidence with it.. But given its with a dealer - likely has very little history period.

that one was mentioned earlier in this thread..... sounds/seems genuine, i think there was possibly a bit of a break in service history (more time related) but on a whole, seemed like a decent car. there is another very similar car for similar money (slightly more miles) that is also very good

I have another one of those Zanzibar Red GT3 "replicas" that were produced for the UK's GT3 launch in early 2001. Mine is a C4 M030 with a black interior with 48k on it. I bought it in April from a well known and well regarded member of 911uk. Having looked around, I decided I'd rather pay more up front than buy cheaply and pay for expensive repairs. I wanted a low mileage, well maintained, aerokitted, rare coloured 996 - there are not many around - I paid £20k. It has had the big jobs done over the last few years including a suspension refresh, brakelines, condensors, clutch, and complete new exhaust system. At the time the specialist who looked after it was tempted to buy it and said he would sell it for £22k all day long, so I wouldn't be surprised if that one sells for near its asking price...

Here's a picture of mine:

That's fab... Lovely colour.. Super miles. I do think the kitted 996 is gorgeous.

Still for sale.
yup - that blue car does look nice...... if it was red i would be on my way ! i have not contacted him to see how much of the 'major' servicing items have been done... but given he has owned it so long i imagine it has been pretty well looked after - unless he is flogging as he knows it needs a few thousand spent on it.

there is another similar car for sale on the 911 forum at similar money... and has also been for sale for a long time.... despite the supposed interest through guys on here - its not like they are selling that quickly as a general rule (unless at eth very cheap end)

I can't believe that nobody has looked at either car.....
if it wasn't for a long piece of water between me and the mainland, i'd have already looked at both.... my problem is i really need to lock in the one car that ticks as many of the boxes as i want before i start booking planes/ferrys

personally i'd rather buy private...... get a feel for where the thing has been living/treated - especially if its been owned for a good few years.

i actually don't like the thought of buying from a dealer.. but would do so for the right car

Porkey - did you look at that Zenith car ? or just enquire ? did you get much info from the seller ? pm me if you prefer.

it does have nice miles, and although not (my) holy grail of guards red...... the fact he has owned it for 11 years and the service history (genuine porsche) as shown.. it should be a pretty good un.

I'm not bothered about an LSD, and the factory lowering kit woudl be nice.. but that car sites well..

cheers Greggy...

ye a- i suspected the red one will be higher than the black one... the black (for me) just doesn't look that wow... but i've personally never been a great fan of black cars.

to be fair though - at the anticipated price it will be marketed at, i think i would struggle to spend that on a car with nearly twice the milage as the zenith blue one for example...

will see...........

The Zenith car has gappy history (I know they mostly all do by now), is a long way from anywhere, and is due a service. Whenever I've had a 996 in it costs about 1k, so I factored that in. For 16k I think it's a good buy, but I'd want the mo30 or equivalent, so not for me.
i assume the service history is patchy in its early life then ? last 10 ish years look reasonable...... sure it hasnt been servivced yearly... but there are no crazy gaps time wise.. and milage wise the gaps look fine.

I would be a lot more worried suspicious if cars have changed multiple hands over time with limited/sporadic service history.

and to the OP i dont actually recall anyone commenting negatively on the porsche dealer in question...
