Before this gets onto values again, i think the summary was that we're all happy they remain cheap.

1. If you already have one it keeps major maintenance cost expectations under control ie rebuilds.
2. If you already have one and you're on here then its unlikely you're going to be selling any time soon.
3. If you're on here and in the market then the cheaper they stay the better!

Excluding wheels, I'm up to around £13k or so on mine. It's probably worth around that on a good day, so as long as the value keeps fairly close to the upkeep I'm happy. I t would need to be a really nice 3.4 to be around the £18k mark, or a really nice aero kitted car to be around the £20k price point smile

£20k would have to be the absolute top, no? If a fully Hartech'd C4S is £26k........

There's a growing view that an early 996 is an 18-20k car. You either pay this upfront, or buy cheaper and then do some work. I guess this is a good rule of thumb, but you might luck out.

Then there's the 2k a year running cost, which seems to have gained acceptance, although upgraditis blows this out of the water pretty fast!
There seems to be a steady supply of 3.4s at £13-14k, including from dealers. They might be £18-20k in future but not now.
I don`t think these are conflicting statements at all ! Yes, cars are available from various sources at 13/14K, but they are going to require work and £ before they are on the button.
I follow the logic but I'd hope car bought from a dealer at £14k wouldn't need another £4k throwing at it.

This one, for example, has been around for a little while at £14k

They advertise on eBay. I've ruled out their cars based on what I've read elsewhere.
Seems reasonably priced
It's 3k more than it was last week but that's the nature of the beast.
I would have thought it has now had some prep. Be good to know.
Indeed. The MOT history hasn't changed yet.

Does the 996 have the issue that vertically backed hatchbacks do, that being if you drive in the rain you need to constantly clear the rear screen? Or are they more like saloons where rear screen retains water when stationary but that quickly clears when underway. Certainly my 944 was more that latter than the former.
No hatchbacks / SUVs do that because they have a vertical back.

996 self clears.

I paid £23k for a 2001 3.4 C2 manual with less than 30k on the clock from Mortimers in Billingshurst. I’ve spent £3k since but a lot of that was ego boosting. What’s it worth now? No idea. Don’t really care either as I’ve no intention of selling it ......ever...... well maybe just before I die.

You owners and prospective owners are starting to sound like the air cooled and GT owners of the recent past. Start talking about the mods and drives, tweaks and maintenance before you turn into the people you never aspired to be 😁

Ive had my 996 for just under 2 years and it’s worth a third of what it’s cost me so far. No regrets.

Several posts about ads being posted and discussion of prices/seeking opinions on cars now.

Is the consensus that there should be a different 996 thread for posts like those?

Fantastic cat d repair, so good the owner of 13 years got rid as soon as it was repaired.

Sorry but I don't believe there is a cheap way into a good 996, by good I mean one that will cost less then £2k a year to run.

Perhaps. The black car above was bought by that trader for less than that (Likely a number beginning with an 11, possibly a 10).

£2k a year running appears to be universal.

ETA. Suspension won't be covered by a warranty, wonder if an LSD would.
