what is an 'early' 3.4 996?
Discussion
So, after a fairly protracted purchase process, I am now the proud owner of the Zenith '99 C2 I linked a few pages back.
The Parr inspection pointed to a number of common 996 issues, the majority of which the selling dealer rectified within the purchase price without quibble, which was refreshing. I took the opportunity to put in a new clutch (at cost) while they were checking the IMS / RMS.
Thus, for £16,485 I have a 76k C2 with factory LSD, no sunroof, 3 spoke wheel, ruffled black leather (hmmmm), refurbed 18" Sports Classics, new aircon rads and regas, replaced RMS and IMS seal (IMS bearing inspected and found to be fine, so left alone), new clutch and flywheel, 4 new coffin arms, replaced PAS return pipe, bodywork dents and some paint issues rectified.
I'm sure this is not the deal of the century, but I think it represents fair value for the mileage, spec, and work done.
I will post a pic or two when I get a moment.
I have a set of the Group 4 Fuchs reps ready to fit (just need some slightly longer wheel bolts and some wheel centres), which I can tell are going to look awesome.
Having now had the opportunity to have a good poke around the car and seen it in different lights it's clear there are a few bits I'd missed which would benefit from attention at some point. There's a tiny bubble of rust under the driver's door window trim, and a bit on the driver's door striker plate (pretty common), and the driver's side front wing has had a less than brilliant respray in a slightly different colour (difficult to match the metallic ?), and with a large "fish eye" in the paint. I plan to do a thorough paint correction and detail on it, which I'm hoping will improve the cosmetics. The driver's seat could also do with a bit of renovation, but that shouldn't be too challenging.
Medium term I'm considering a full TopGear exhaust system and the Designtek Coilover kit. I was looking at Koni adjustables or MO030, but the Konis are totally out of stock and the factory closed for the summer, and the Designtek kit is cheaper. I appreciate it is less of a known quantity, but the car probably won't be tracked, and the Designtek will give a lot of adjustability and the potential to lower it as I wish compared with just replacing the shocks with OE. No doubt there will be some bushes that will benefit from a change. I want to fit an Apple Car Play double din unit, so any advice on that would be much appreciated (I've explored various threads on here and 911uk, so have a pretty good idea of what's involved, but any direct experience of a trusted fitter in Surrey / SW London would be helpful).
We'll see how long I resist engine mods, but I'm already eyeing up a GT3 throttle body and IPD plenum, and I'd also fit a low temp thermostat and underdrive pulley. I may also look at a third radiator and deep sump for peace of mind, but there's no huge hurry. Ultimately I do like the look of a duck tail !
As of yet I've done little more than drive the car back the c.40 miles from the dealer, so have no real thoughts to offer on the driving experience, though this is clearly going to change with the intended mods above ! It seems very civilized and refined in comparison to my track monster Cayman.

To be honest I'm not that concerned about the weight of the wheels. I realise it's weight in the wrong place for ultimate driving dynamics, but they are 18", so likely to be lighter than most 19" in any case. They seem well made and well finished, so I'm happy to be a tart with cool looking boat anchors attached to my car
Anyway, it's pretty free of heavy-weight options, so I don't think a few extra kgs on the wheels is going to have that big an effect.

Sounds like a good purchase - I might be interested in the current Sport Classic II wheels, if you decide to sell, please feel free to drop me a PM. Mine had them fitted from factory, but at some point they have been swapped for 17inch C4 wheels.Anyway, it's pretty free of heavy-weight options, so I don't think a few extra kgs on the wheels is going to have that big an effect.
And the Top Gear "Mild Sports" exhaust is now fitted.
And I'm bitterly disappointed with it - the quality is fine, but it's very quiet indeed. Should have went for the "Sports" and lived with any drones from it
Ah well, that will be another couple of hundred quid to do the PSE hack to it ....

Or gone for a Cargraphic, awesome sound with absolutely no drone at all. Not cheap though. And I'm bitterly disappointed with it - the quality is fine, but it's very quiet indeed. Should have went for the "Sports" and lived with any drones from it

Zanzibar though

I have the mild sports and the 200 cell cat and the sound is impressive. If I were you I’d get the cats and don’t bother with the PSE hack. It’s more expensive I agree but in the end it’s a far better system and the car revs a lot more freely. And I'm bitterly disappointed with it - the quality is fine, but it's very quiet indeed. It sounds like you’ve done well. Bought a nice car at a fair price from a decent vendor. Your approach to addressing actual and preventative issues is pragmatic and should serve you well. If you “fixed” the paint you’d have proved the £20k rule! If you make the most of it with detailing and correction and are happy to drive and use as is I think you’ve done very well indeed! Welcome to the club. The Parr inspection pointed to a number of common 996 issues, the majority of which the selling dealer rectified within the purchase price without quibble, which was refreshing. Not sure if it helps any, but the H&R Cup suspension kit is just a rebranded Koni Sport kit. Good prices from Germany via eBay.
