Wheels look awesome. I have some in my basket but just haven't yet pulled the trigger. What size and offset did you go for?

Potentially bad news if they have replaced the coated pistons with those without the coating. I know some people like aftermarket pistons but these surely go hand in hand with the bores so you'd need to know what has been done to the them. As always with these rebuilds it opens up a lot of questions but it could be good news. Its also had a clutch which may have been done while the engine was out anyway. Your 8 grand doesn't really stretch to much more. A cheap rebuild is probably 4 grand and I dont think that includes new pistons. If they mention IMS then maybe thats what it failed and why it needed a rebuild. As always with these cars you soon forget about the pretty colours when you start digging into the history.

The car comes with a 6 month warranty apparently so I'd be kicking the arse out of the car for 6 months to see if it holds up.

The market for interesting 'cheap' 996 seems buoyant with enough people to take a punt. Both the aero-kitted cars I posted sold (adverts removed so assume sold) within 24hrs.

I took a punt on a 3.6 this summer (I was looking for an early 3.4 hence why I am on here and keep posting ones that come up on my searches) I have a decent Pork-Bork fund I am willing to use and even if in the future my initial spend is doubled due to engine issues I can't think of a car I would have enjoyed more and if it doesn't bork I get to spend my savings on something exciting like a kitchen...

Why not buy an early car and bail on your 3.6?

Now I have got to know it I really like my 3.6, C2 manual in Bas black with black heated 8 ways, M030 and sunroof delete along with some other nice options (and it was a bargain!)

It has good history and after 6 mths there are no major concerns, I wouldn't want to jump ship and roll the dice a second time!

I don't think an early car would offer me anything more, I am no driving god and like the safety blanket of PSM. The 3.6 is a peach, really revvy with a lovely intake / exhaust growl.

TBH I have kept a close eye on the 996 market and I don't think there has been one at the same sort of budget that makes me wish I had held out a bit longer instead of buying my one.

I have no PSM and have tried hard to get the car to slide around it just doesn't. I have had a couple of random slides caused by ice or something else on the road - PSM might have helped here - not sure. I'm not sure if I would have PSM now if I could. I like knowing its all down to me and it definitely makes you think more before you go into a bend or make a move. It probably makes me drive slower too.

The earlier car is supposed to be less refined and more raw. Now you've lived with your gen 2 you should try an early car and see if it feels different. Thats what I would do. Yes you're rolling the dice again but you're not in a rush and there is no reason you'd get a pup 2nd time round. If you bought your current car cheap then you should be able to get out of it easily enough without losing any money.

Just a thought. I like car shopping and recently I've been feeling the itch....

Mine has PSM - I think it’s one of the earlier 2WD cars to have it (jan 00).

It’s only trigged in the snow and once when I had a big aquaplane on the m6 toll road... couple of spins and ended up on the hard shoulder facing the way I’d come... not sure if it really helped, but I was very lucky not to hit anything either way.

I wouldn’t have chosen to have it, but I wouldn’t discount a car that had it either as it’s never really interfered with how the car drives.

PSM didn't help when I aquaplaned in my 981. I kept it pointing forward though which felt like a win at the time until I saw this.

The only itch I have is for an aircooled car but that is another story / thread and is financially a no-go for a number of years (assuming I actually drive one and it lives up to my unrealistic high expectations!)

Plan B will be to stick with what I have and chuck in a pair of replica Porsche GT3 buckets (retrim centre in red tartan or Pascha) once the kids have outgrown the rear seats and fit bronze OZ Alleggerita HLT rims.

I certainly don't rely on PSM, I am more than aware it is a rear wheel drive car with 60% rear weight balance and fat low profile tyres so gets driven with respect especially in the wet.

I think a date at the Thruxton skid pan is probably overdue!

Even in the wet I couldn't mine to slide by just going quicker and quicker into the same bend. I bottled it before the car lost grip but clearly I'm a pussy.

Never give rear traction a 2nd thought anymore. I’ve done 120k miles in mine, so I know it pretty well. Even in the wet it has unbreakable traction in anything other than 2nd gear with lots of lock applied.

I’m much more conscious of managing front end grip, and weight transfers when the suspension is fully loaded. Losing the rear with momentum is much more dangerous than losing traction... and much more likely if you’re pushing hard.
