Even in the wet I couldn't mine to slide by just going quicker and quicker into the same bend. I bottled it before the car lost grip but clearly I'm a pussy.
Sorry, what was it you were trying to achieve?

To get a feel for how much grip there was and how it behaved near its limit. Find a reasonably tight well sighted bend and try driving through it quicker and quicker. I also tried driving round a round about several times gradually increasing speed too.

How long have you had it now and what suspension is on yours - is it just standard?

12 years. Bought on 57, now on 177.

Suspension fully replaced. All small bits 2 years ago (top mounts, coffin arms, tie bars etc), then H&R springs (-30mm), Koni shocks, M030 front bar & H&R adjustable rear bar, plus a custom alignment last year.

It’s firm, but not ridiculously so for the road. Ferris has been in it. He’ll confirm how well it handles.

I've gone from living out in the sticks to inner city. I had wonderful empty country lanes and now my driving is just congested urban crawl. I know the sensible thing to do would be sell the car or if I keep it then fit softer suspension. I just can't get excited about that as it feels like a backward step.

Never give rear traction a 2nd thought anymore. I’ve done 120k miles in mine, so I know it pretty well. Even in the wet it has unbreakable traction in anything other than 2nd gear with lots of lock applied.

I’m much more conscious of managing front end grip, and weight transfers when the suspension is fully loaded. Losing the rear with momentum is much more dangerous than losing traction... and much more likely if you’re pushing hard.
Just to add to this as a less experienced driver. Feel of my car which is very low, stiff and hard - possibly as low as his or about even - not sure if the lowered-ness makes much difference to the novice. Once you get the nose turned then you can basically plant the throttle and the car will just do it. Obviously you dont want to be lifting mid bend to adjust or change gear or anything silly - not tried this clearly. If I am going a bit too quick mid bend I just gently lift the throttle a bit and sometimes I have to adjust the steering because you can feel the front start to grip more or the rear grip less as you lift. Getting the nose to turn in can feel light or understeery but like Chris says getting some weight onto the front will get more grip and turn in. I rarely go fast enough now where the front wont turn in so just need the confidence to keep going. You can just apply more steering and it will turn unless going crazy fast obviously. Its almost intuitive if it wont turn to lift throttle and you probably wont be full throttle entering a bend anyway. My car occasionally skips a bit if it hits a bump mid bend as its so stiff which makes you think uh oh but the car settles back into the bend and just grinds. It really does feel like its about to break traction sometimes but it never does. You have to stop thinking hang on or errr maybe thats too much and just lean on the car. It's easier said than done. These cars are great.

Your tyres must be very good. I have an 01 C4 with PSM as standard. Even with 4 wheel drive I can quite easily get the light blinking coming off a local roundabout that can usually be taken at pretty high (but legal) speeds.

Admittedly the Pirelli's on the car are shagged.

Think I remember reading a post by Hartech that explained the later coating was silicone based and the material flaked off causing tiny beads of silicone being rubbed up and down the liner causing the scoring.

I found the only way to get a 996 to slide is by using weight transfer. It will not slide on the throttle at all (understeer being a natural state if you drive it like you would a BMW E30, as I initially tried). Once you simultaneously lift off and steer aggressively into a corner, it will drift with the best of them.

That car was privately advertised at £12,950 before they bought it.
