Welcome to Porsche ownership. Where they take a very normal looking aluminium and leather gear knob, stick a Porsche crest on it and suddenly it's £1000. Would you like a matching handbrake sir? That'll be another £1000 please.

That is what I feared, was hoping someone knew of an alternative or a breaker (I guess Porsche breakers are rare).

I have taken some time cleaned up the exterior & interior of mine and am very please with how it looks now....It’s a tidy car but not too perfect, which makes it nice and usable.

The breakers are all on ebay. You don't need any knowledge. Just search for 996 gear knob etc.

Seems pricey although I like the look of it. Have to change the shark fins though as they should be wide body only IMO.

I have an alcantara shifter in mine... it’s not official Porsche, but it looks right. It wasn’t super expensive (<200 IIRC), but I can’t remember where I got it from.

Wasn’t eBay, so must have been from one of the Uk internet suppliers.

Would anyone buy a Cat C (S) car if it was cheap enough?

I've seen a silver 98 C2 manual, cabrio for £7K which other than being recorded Cat S (was C), a non creased dent in the front wing (which I reckon I can pull out with my dent kit and peeling lacquer on the bonnet, looks a bargain for the price. The car is standard with removable hard top, fried egg ambers an d turbo twist alloys. It's had an IMS upgrade using the EPS kit, which is shame for an early car at 110K miles, as the original was probably fine.

The MOT history looks fairly clean, but it's had 17 owners in 22 years, which is setting alarm bells ringing. It was Cat S in 2010, 8 owners and 20,000 miles ago.

It's a cheap way into 911 ownership and would give me a project to get my teeth into. I understand it would never be worth over £10K with the recorded insurance write off, but it's had a fair bit of money spent on it in the last few years, control arms, bushes, Miltek stainless boxes, coil packs, tyres,

True, my other car is a Clio 182 and they are being broken daily so there is no shortage of nice parts!

As the saying goes, if you are willing to consider buying it today. Then another will also consider buying it in the future.

Everything sells if priced right.

OEM ones aren't a grand, either.

If you're on a tight budget this looks pretty ideal. Would need a careful inspection but a lot of common issues appear to have been addressed. I doubt you'll loose money on a sale down the line. I'm sure you can get good money for the hardtop which would free up some cash for some decent servicing too.

The wings are straightforward to replace, also - that looks like a good deal to me.

I'd refuse to pay 400 for that. Does that make me tight?

I was talking specifically about the one that was part of the interior option with the aluminium handbrake. Those are c£1000 each still.

There was a load of people on the facebook group fitting these. Looks a bit questionable in the listing but the photos of them fitted looked really good. And you don't need to wire up the lights

No. I might feel different about it if it was a coupe or if it had the soft top up (the only acceptable look for a cab to my eyes). Structural damage puts me right off.

Love those seats. Assume they're aftermarket?

And I do like the Function First silver/red script knob. And their centre console riser.

I have the alloy version of that, it's horrible in the summer and horrible in the winter. It's fine when it's cooled down/warmed up, spring and autumn are good months to change gear with it.

I was initially looking at 986 and 987 S Boxsters, but no matter how much I kept telling myself they're so much better value, I just couldn't bring myself to really want one. I suppose the 996 911 thing is down to always desiring 911's as a child.

Something cheap like this, as a third car, on top of a VW Transporter campervan and an old 3.0 Jag Sport R, S-Type, will just be used as a toy for now, with a view to getting one as a replacement for the daily driver Jag if I get on with it, when the Jag finally dies, which could be a while now I've fully sorted it! smile

Edit - I've booked the train to travel up on Sunday to view it and will take my laptop, so if it matches the description, I can transfer the money, tax and insure it from the quote I;ve already saved at £208 fully comp with business use.

Now I've almost finished restoring my motorbikes, with work dropping quieter, I need a new project!
