Get the pics up when you have them on. I've been toying with the idea of bronze (bola b1 or CSR) on my nipple pink 996

I think those door decals above look good. I've been thinking about bronze ones on my Vesuvius Grey. Maybe getting the wheel centres coloured to match. But then it's starting to get a bit "keen" and I like the under-the-radar nature of it so far.

Shameless photo, under a bright orange sodium light the vesuvius looks like a lovely matte brown. Def a consideration for the future if it needs paint!

Will do.

I started looking at the CSR’s but was told they were all out of stock in 996 fitment and unlikely to be any before Christmas.

As it happens the B11’s have really grown on me and apparently I got 2 of the last 3 9” wide 19” wheels at the factory.

Ah, I had planned to stick with 18s. Think 19s look too big especially when the spoke goes all the way to the out edge of the wheel.

Age and mileage took care of his bearings, pad breakdown is a separate issue.

His engine usage is very different from the majority of these cars, most of which will have main bearings that start to show wear around 100,000 miles.
Looks like I was wrong - it was the timing chain guide breaking up:

No 1 bearing showing wear to the copper, the failure mode for this was a timing chain guide starting to break up and shedding material which damaged number 1 crank bearing in turn leading to rapid wear. Just one of those things but a preventative change of timing chain guides every 200K miles would remove the chance of this happening.

It's his opinion, however if main bearing one is adjacent to the flywheel other opinions are available - the crank is cantilevered from that bearing, and doesn't have one directly behind the flywheel. This means that it takes more punishment than the other bearings as the crank flexes.

Hartech machine the case and insert an extra bearing behind the flywheel which stops the crank flexing, and effectively removes the wear that PPBB observed, as tested in the engines in the Boxsters that Hartech race.

As you say, other opinions are available.

Yeah I read this the other day. The motor is low miles anyway so I'm just going to have to roll the dice here for a bit. Just did a 400 mile jaunt up to Scotland and the car is running better than ever, oil pressure, temps and power all spot on. Its the first really big trip I've done with the car and its such a great cruiser, settles into a very natural feeling cruise at 90ish.

Averaged over 30mpg for the trip too which is remarkable. Much better than my old M3 although a fair amount of average speed limit sections helped that I'm sure.

Unfortunately I'm not there to enjoy it, but after sitting in my in laws garage since January, mine is alive again.

My wife's picking it up from her parents place in Stafford this weekend and taking it down to Essex, where's she's currently living. Arranged for a local mechanic to pop round and put a new battery on it as a precaution, and according to the wife it fired up 1st time.

Hopefully these stupid travel restrictions will end at some stage and I'll be able to fly back and get it MOT'd/serviced.

High-mileages are not unheard of on 993s, but I remember this gent was on rennlist was also doing big miles daily, on rather cold climate;

300k, and still on the original engine. Great story both, though!

Let me know when you can get over Chris. We'll go for a blast and get some breakfast somewhere

Cheers buddy.

Just heard from the wife and car made the 200 Mule trip south without a hitch.

Just need to wait for these stupid travel restrictions to lift now.

I noticed at the weekend that my brake lights have stopped working. A friend told me, the week before as he was following me, that they were intermittent but this weekend I had another friend check and there was nothing.

Is it going to be the switch under the pedal? If so, can someone confirm which is the right part for my '98 manual car? Is it this one?

https://www.design911.co.uk/fu/prod7161/Switch-bra...

I tried to take some photos up into the footwell just before I abandoned it in my friend's car park but it was hard to see what's what without any natural light. It looks like it's got the brown casing as above though.

If it's not likely to be the switch, what else should I be checking?

I think the switch is known to be a bit flakey, is a good first point of call.

It looks like there's a different design of part too, eg

https://www.onlinecarparts.co.uk/car-brands/spare-...

The one on the car now looks like the design911 type with a square casing.

edit: This was a useful find on Google (maybe everyone already has it).

Speaking of early 996’s, as anyone seen this car yet?

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/202...

Engine rebuild having been done by RPM makes it very appealing !

My first 996 ten years ago was a C4 and in my usual day to day driving, I never really noticed it to be honest. I was pretty ham fisted back then to be fair!

I wouldn’t track this car as have other things for that so can forgive it being a 4.

Does the price seem reasonable?

Depends on what has been done during the rebuild I'd say. You either are getting really excited by the rebuild or you really want a C4 with ruffled leather or a combination of both. I'm not sure a 2000 really qualifies as an early car with the early car piston coatings. I was told to stick to 97 to 98 and maybe 99 but not 2000. Just regurgitating there so no idea the validity.
