Guys I need a sanity check to make sure I am doing the right thing, I think I know the answer but would appreciate others input.
I was planning in getting back into a 3.4 coupe about Christmas time, this would be a weekend/second/retirement car & certainly not the family car. Sods law has it as soon as I start my homework the near perfect car comes up, near perfect & this is where I want your advice.
My local Indy Porsche specialist that I have know for over 12 years & trust as a friend doesn't normally sell cars but he was doing another client a favour, the car threw something & needed work (oil & water mixing) so he took this one in to work on during quite spells.
Good points:
1999 car, so it is my preferred duel bearing model
C4, my preference over the C2. I go to the Alps some times & it would be nice to take it one winter.
Manual, everyone preferred choice
Has had disks, pads, clutch, IMS & RMS all done within last 10K miles
No aero kitted, this is my preferred choice
Smooth black leather & 3 spoke steering wheel, again my preferred choice.
Fully documented history with a very thick folder of receipts.
Last owner 10 years.
Bad points:
It has done 120K miles
Here is the interesting part, he will take engine out & send it to Hartech to put right then refit it, this will also mean the manifold fixings will be changed.
So do you think all this work out weight the higher miles than I wanted? I should say it is at a price I am happy with.
Also since the engine is out & it is in the workshop anyway, is there any other issues I should be getting looked at?
As said I think I already know the answer but good to hear others thoughts.

Thanks. I would rather not say what he is looking for just now but would be interested in what others think a fair price is

If it's a price you're happy with what's not to like? The headline 120k miles might discourage a number of buyers if you're concerned about future potential for resale but if it's a keeper who cares! You mention thick folder of receipts so have other items been addressed. You mention clutch, IMS & RMS, discs and pads but what about suspension, brake pipes &, rads? What about interior wear such as sear bolsters?

If you decide to pass on it please let me know as I could be interested. After months of anticipation I'm now in a position to buy!!

nearly 20k or a bit less gets you a decent mileage boxster(987) gen2 with proper engine nowadays. So anything beyond that price for a rebuilt early 996 is too much imho, it really has to be a sort of sentimental situation. biggrin 986s are way too economical for a less hassle and more fun.

I put Winter tyres on all my cars. Have done for the last 6 years or so. 4wd is completely unnecessary. Even my big heavy rwd BMW with an old school slusher gearbox is unstoppable in ice, snow and whatever else on good Winter tyres.

You can even run good Winter tyres all year round. I've done this too but there really is no need.

The C4 is a bit heavier I think and didn't the first GT3 use the C4 body because it is stiffer - therefore different and heavier.

Ha ha, it's true isn't it.

I agree Boxster 3.2 S offer the best value/driving experience, but when I was growing up I dreamt about owning a 911, so nothing else would do.

Agreed. Plus those who have 4WD continue to use Summers longer than is prudent.
They usually only find the folly of their ways when trying to stop..... .....4WD no use at all then!

I'm not dissing Boxsters, I really like them.

Yup, it's better biggrin

Total personal opinion, I do not think they do look/feel fun or sporty. Any 911, 1997 onwards. (996, 997, 991 and etc...) The price range also is still too much considering their possible issues (which are sort of rare and mostly sorted out), there are much more interesting cars (Audi, Vantage, BMW) around or way cheaper boxster/cayman cousins great option as a second car.

That is again totally personal opinion, I did shopped around last year very long time and decided that they are not for me.

Say 10k 996, needs engine, that takes around 12k. And there are still loads to consider, exhaust, cooling and suspension, which would easily push towards 30s. Is it worth it? Probably for 996 C4S personally, not even Turbo as they are super-complicated.

Gen 2 987, is a peace of mind, when you just wanna turn the ignition and hoon around town like hooligans, and less than 20k. hehe

I keep flitting between the two platforms that is boxster/911. I sold my last 911 a 996.1 in march and bought a 981. I would of loved to of kept both as this would be the ideal however that is a luxury i cant afford at the moment. The 911 gives you the more grown up prestige feeling with the added bonus of small rear seats useful if you have 2 kids but for better value and more useable everyday fun the boxster wins imo.
Hence owning both would be perfect!!

Nobody likes a show off!!!!!

Only kidding, if I didnt have 2 young children I would have my 996.1 aero with my 981 for sure, however think my kids are worth a tad more to me than my old 996............. mmmmm let me just think about that????!!!!!!

It may be an allusion but how much bigger does the newer boxster look than a 996. For me it will double up as the family second& therefore needs those Emergancy rear seats

It feels bigger too. 996 is a small car.

When I took my brother in law to pick up his 991gt3 in my 996, I ended up parked next to a new 718 in the OPC car park. 996 looked like a toy car running on castors laugh

The modem stuff is HUGE.

First: my engine is fine.
Second: I could do with a pair of heads for a 3.4L M96, not (as previously mentioned) because mine have gone boom but to send to a chap to port and make some calculations as to cam profiles that might suit the capacity increase.

If anyone knows of a decent pair/is selling/spots some, please do let me know.
