Win one for 20 quid, looks a tidy car except the GT3 badge

I'm not saying that one in particular is dodgy, but I've seen some of these on Facebook which are really suspect.

The "winner" of one had a very distinctive Eastern European name, and going by location and a bit of Googling, was a director of another company who, by pure coincidence of course, also did these Facebook "win a car for £20" raffles.

I've seen tickets sold numbers go down over night and have no faith in many of them being fair and legal. They certainly are never registered with the gambling commission to guarantee fairness.

BOTB seem legitimate, new cars from them though not used.

Would this conversion be legal in the U.K.

Basically both silencer boxes are replaced by these pipes. Giving a substantial weight saving & a great sound. yes

As long as the cats were there, and it passed emissions then it's quite possible. Although -if it did pass- I imagine that the excessive noise would be an advisory.

There's a clip on YouTube from someone who fitted them - lots of cackling from the driver when he tests it for the first time as it's comically loud, then in the comments he says he reverted back to silencers pretty fast as it made the car unusable.

It wouldn't surprise me if it adversely affected performance too.

A cheapie, if anyone fancies a risk on "intermix" of oil and water.

Could that be anything simple?

There is an oil/water cooler which has been known to fail. It's in a pretty unpleasant place on the engine, opposite the AOS and up against the bulkhead.

Or it could be a cracked cylinder or head. Or just a headgasket (do they fail in this way?)

Sounds like it's a bit rusty underneath too....

Looks lovely on the outside though, wheels look nice and it's got sports seats. Could break for 5k if it does turn out to be a rotter.

That car came up in my youtube feed the other week, I did think "ooh" until I clocked the Werthers Original interior.
I do like the Friends Green Porsche videos, the more in depth ones make you realise what a minefield buying privately is given everything they usually have to change to get them tip top.

£26k does seem a bit rich though. Magnus Walker has one almost identical but with a black interior which I guess has helped to destigmatise the whole wannabe GT3 saddo thing.

Just heard back from S&C that my 'spare' gearbox is scrap. Arsebiscuits, my cunningly laid plan has all gone to st.

Going to have to take the car off the road and send the box off for a rebuild now. At least it will be a 'matching numbers' car now for whatever it's worth.

My advice to any would be 996 buyers is have a close listen to the gearbox for any whining noises!

What was the diagnosis to say it was “borked”? I’m waiting on my pinion bearing rebuild to be done when the local gearbox guy runs out of Covid excuses. Mine developed the pinion bearing whine about 12 months after I bought my car privately (& it’s now done about 87k).

I’ll update you when I have mine back....

Who are you using for the rebuild? There was a comprehensive set of photos showing various chipped teeth and badly worn synchros that convinced me the box was knackered.

Re. the seller, it was a private sale and I don't think he had any particular knowledge about the box itself so not expecting any recompense. Rolled the dice and came up short unfortunately.

The chap in one of FGP's recent videos, seems to know what he is talking about with respect to 996 gearboxes and pinion gear failure:

I'll be interested to know what your rebuild costs look like. The whine my gearbox makes doesn't quite sound like an old Mini yet in first gear but it is annoying. At least you can't hear it at any reasonable speed and it hasn't got worse. Mine appeared as soon as the correct fluid was put into the 'box when the engine rebuild was completed so someone clearly tried to hide it.

Thanks for that, shame the rebuilder didn't get mentioned - just 'North London' which is interesting.... Just gave them a ring and the guy was cagey about the rebuilder they use but quoted £1300 for removing the box and getting the work done which is fairly unbelievable value...

Dammit, whats the latest on your wheels? I've got a friend trying to buy a set of 19" LM that are meant to be shipped from Japan, 6-8 week lead time to his door from point of order
