Ooh. If you're going back to gingers, I may well be interested in buying your clear fronts. (And poss rears!) Mine have gone inside the lens, and are not home-salvageable.

That E36 is lovely, I have had a few and think they are such great looking cars.

Agreed. I've had five and quite fancy another.

I'll make sure to let you know once I've sourced the replacements.

Car has a K&N induction kit fitted so that's coming off too. As for the Aero kit, the car was ordered with part kit only which was dealer fitted. I'm glad it didn't have the front bumper as it wouldn't get up/down my drive with it.

I'm planning on spending some time cleaning it this weekend so hopefully I can revive a few areas.

2001 c2. 3.4

Slight grumbling noise noticed at idle, low rpm when pulling into my garage at weekend.

Truck to Indy yeasterday - just to be safe.

Filter full of copper swarf, significant debris in sump, various metal & plastic bits up to 2mm diameter.

Bottom end failure of some sort / multiple sorts...? - details to follow when engine comes apart.

I hope the Crank is ok.....garage pretty sure it will be.

Then the choices begin!

103k miles - new bottom end fitted by Porsche under waranty in 2008 at circa 50k miles.
Always maintained well. I have owned for 4 years...20k odd. Did the sensible stuff like new
Water pump LTT when I got it.

Motor has always felt sweet and strong, filter clean in feb ! - i knew this would happen at some point, was hoping for a few more miles though... odd that there was no loss of OP ... and temps were normal on my last drive.

Commiserations. What's the plan now? Hartech?

That doesn't sound great frown

I don't think it's a huge amount more for the 3.7 Hartech conversion over a standard rebuild....

3.7 is very tempting.
The car is pretty sorted in many ways - CG suspension refresh recently with Ohlins R&T etc.
Maintenance has been active rather than reactive with myself and previous owner, huge file of reciepts inc for a lovely Cargraphic Exhaust.

I need to drill into the cost a bit.
My Indy has a good relationship with Hartech, so once we know how wrecked it is a plan can be made. All avaible bottom end improvements are a given. The hard choices are the top end I think, not least what knock on spend is unleashed by going for more capacity.

I immagine a new clutch is on the cards ( current one was fine...but prob 10+ years / 50k on it) then all the other choices.....DMF or LWF etc.

I could get carried away.....
But I cant really afford to go nuts.

If you're changing the clutch then the DMF might need changing anyway. I've never driven a car with LWF but it must make the engine more responsive. I've seen the videos on youtube from carrera light weight [or whatever he is called] and the engine definitely sounds much more peppy with the LWF.

I would love to go for a lighter flywheel but I understand that there might be some concerns about damage to the engine due to the relatively unsupported flywheel flange. I'm sure Hartech will be able to fill you in!

Yes - more vibration etc. I drove an early Cayman S with a LWF in the summer, and it was great fun.

But I believe if you have a proper bottom end from the likes of Hartech then this is no concern.

Sorry to hear of your engine woes, i hope it isn't too painful.

I am always slightly scared of engine failure on my 996 despite there being no warning or issues as it stands.

I've had a 2002 996 (C2 tip) for 10 years now, 130,000 miles- not had the IMS done.
I've taken it to a couple of places who advised me that if it hasn't gone by now I'm best off leaving it.

I’ve a 98 on 144k miles and have no hint of any issues either, doesn’t even loose a drop of oil. Engine issues do weigh on my mind but I’m not going to mess with it for fear of creating a problem.

My only issue is with the chain tensioners as I get the 1 second rattle on cold start.

I Still dont know what the failure mode was. I may find out later tiday, more likely early next week.

The engine was brilliant right up to the last time I heard it at idle prior to shut down.

I have not yet seen the contents of the filter and sump. But there was significant metal and plastic in both.

All I know for now is that it is a bottom end failure. My concern that the Crank may be damaged ratcheted up somewhat after a call to Hartech yesterday.

There are indeed many non IMS failure modes in the bottom half of these engines. And a few bits of plastic from a failed chain guide / tensioner can apparently disrupt oil flow and bring about disaster very quickly.

Having just found this thread, the longest running 3.4 post in the history of the internet,

I just fell down a rabbit hole of going back over it the last 30 minutes or so - some lovely cars present!

This is my little project when time allows, i'm rather fond of it smile

Just watched a Friends Green video and its all 997 cars now. Perhaps he has moved on from earlier 996 cars. His garage does look a lot fuller now and I also saw an r8 in there. I think its risky for him dealing in 997 cars if they are more prone to engine problems but wish him well in his endeavours.
