The alternator looks like it is airbox and aux belt off. Then throttle body off to get access to the back of the starter to change the Y cable.
There's a thread on RennTech which recommends heating the plastic fitting on the new cable with hot water to remove it, which means it can be fitted without removing the power steering reservoir.

I'll let you know how I get on. I think I'll see if there's any damage before committing to do the starter as well as the next few months are going to be expensive.

Does anyone know if the lighter is permanently live? I've bought a house without a garage, so was thinking of getting a solar trickle charger to sit on the dash

Alternator is a super easy job.

Driving home from work yesterday my rev counter unexpected died, then flickered about a bit, then went back to normal. It's fine again now, must be something in the water this time of year.

Any ideas anyone? Thinking poor connection somewhere...

Must be the time of year as I started my C4 the other week and immediately flicked the lights on. Saw the voltage gauge bounce and then the PSE switch wouldn’t work! Everything else was fine and it had been fine ever since

Interested how much work is involved to change y cable. I'd probably do starter at same time also.
Haven't done the starter on mine, but have changed the alternator (very straightforward) and the Y cable (simple enough job, but made awkward due to not having super long bendy arms)

There's a solar charger thread on 911uk that suggests it is live but I can't run my compressor off mine with the ignition off. Mine is one of those weird 996.1.5 cars though with a mix of .1 and .2 features.

After reading the 911uk thread I bought the AA one below as it gives the option of cig lighter/OBD port/terminal clamps. Seemed to work OK at keeping it charged in the better weather but doubt it would keep it topped up over winter.

I'll have to try mine and see if it's live then as it's an early car who knows!

My cars live outside and they are sometimes treated to a charge via the mains. I've found one of the best ways to do this with your Porsche (if you want the bonnet closed properly and the car locked) is to feed the mains in through the gap between the bonnet and the windscreen, while the bonnet is up. Then stash the charger in there close to the battery and close the bonnet so even if it rains the whole lot stays nice and dry.

I’ve had a frustrating day with mine, got the alternator off fine, but the 2 screws holding the voltage regulator to the alternator were seized and sheered when trying to remove them. Steel bolts in an aluminium housing. I got 1 drilled out nicely, but the other had sheered with an uneven surface which was pushing the drill bit off into the aluminium. So I have ordered an alternator.

The fuses are all fine so I have either blown dipped, main, and fog lights at the front, or Rennlist tells me the headlights switch is prone to failure. I’ll get the multimeter out tomorrow.

Then I discovered a screw in the near side front tyre, too close to the edge to repair. It currently wears 235/40/18s, so I have ordered a pair of the correct 225 Pilot Sport 4s.

The headlight switches are indeed temperamental. They can sometimes be fixed with a good blast of wd-40 though and are simple to remove so might be worth giving that a shot first.

MOT - check, no advisories
Service - check, nothing to report
Bodywork audit - check, needs attention

Pretty excited to have the car usable. Its done under 350 miles in the past year.

Imminent decision about how much to spend on superficial paint issues. Quick paint, or take the opportunity to get some carbon wings...

As always, Matt at porschacare is thoroughly recommended.

Hello folks,

Found this topic on a search for the MOMO boss kits, circa page 104, then just went on a deepdive for the past 9 days!

This is my early cable throttle manual C2 996.

Guards Red
Factory Carrera Aero Kit
No Sunroof
Black ruffled leather
Extended leather

Previous owner fitted a sports top gear exhaust, it's not loud enough yet.
Also added alcantara to the steering wheel, GT3 RS style
a double din kenwood which is ok but not my jam.

Since purchasing him in September '19, I've had carried out the following bits.

IMS bearing was weeping so that was replaced.
Bilstein PSS10 coilovers
Sachs lightweight flywheel
CG alignment to X74 parameters
BBS LM F1 wheels (Keeping my inner JDM fanboi happy!)

Plans for the future,

Sort the gearbox whine out (on load in 5th and 6th gear around 55mph so probably the pinion bearing)
add 200 cell xpipe and equal length headers
a single din unit and update the speaker system
an LSD
Pole Positions
red belts
an oilcooler
an RMS that doesn't sodding leak.

I love the car!

I’ve got the mild sports TopGear exhaust with 200 cell cat and S/S headers off eBay on my C2 manual. Sounds about right.

Yours is a nice spec and I do like Guards red. Good looking car.

I don't think you enticed the Model T enough to give chase!

Sounds excellent btw!

Car looks great - thoughts on the lightweight flywheel? How much did it cost you - I've just done a flywheel and clutch change and was so tempted to go for the LW option....

Mail me and I can give you a good lead on a gearbox rebuild place if you're in the South of England - or willing to travel to get here!

When I was investigating gearboxes I discovered all these fail possibly due to the bearing being closed so it doesn't get lubrication from gearbox oil but just destroys it's internal grease instead. Some people suggest removing the bearing covers or using different open bearings. I'd be interested to hear what people are doing with these because the standard closed bearings just sound wrong and clearly are all failing over time and use.

Mate put his 3.4 up on eBay last Friday-had a couple of very close to asking (within a couple of thousand) offers within a couple of hours of going live.

What's the consensus of prices these days? One offer was from a dealer so you'd image he was going to put at least few grand on top, is a £20-something-thousand 3.4 the norm these days?
