So Hartech did a bottom end rebuild then a couple of thousand miles later a top end rebuild?

I would be wanting to know exactly what Hartech did and of this was the "full monty" or not. I have seen cars advertised as having a "Hartech rebuild" but when you get into the detail, it wasn't the full works.
Would a 3.4 need “the full works”? My understanding was that the full works was only needed (or preferred) in the M96/97 larger engines where bore/chunk problems were more likely rather than the earlier IMS/cam chain problems this 3.4 would have been susceptible to.

Some people pay for the extra bells and whistles while they are at it. Especially if going for a little increase in capacity. Generally the cheaper repairs are carried out under warranty and dont include any extras.

Hartech have, or at least had, indicative pricing for different work on their website. As mentioned, some refer to a Hartech rebuild even if there has been minimal work done I.e. a single cylinder. My 3.7 rebuild had the bells and whistles and came to over £15k, so their are rebuilds and there are rebuilds.

Sod all to do with the current topic but here are some pics of my 2001 3.4 C2 manual that I’ve done @1000 m this week around the north of England. I’m 68 now and will sell it when I’m 70. 38k on the clock.

Sell it when you're 90 with 150k on the clock

Why do you need to sell it when you are 70?

What are the most common areas for rust on a 996?

Around the arches, ends of the sills, in the B pillar by the door catch? Anywhere else?

Around the front subframe mounts appears to be a growing problem area from what I have seen, thankfully I don’t appear to have any issues here.

I do have a tiny bit around the door catches which is common and having taken my rear arch liners out I would highly recommend people do the same. They catch a load of crap and I had a tiny bit of surface corrosion which was caught in time.

Lovely looking example, great background and well done for giving it a good run out.

The 996 Carrera shape has aged well.

Totally. I have no idea how that film relates to one needs to sell their car at the age of 70…still makes no sense to me.

I just noticed this on their site. Seems rather optimistic. A similar mileage turbo would be a few grand more.

It’s just that I usually have a plan with my second car on how long I keep it for and that’s normally about 5/6 years which would tally with me turning 70.

I'm impressed that you have a specific plan. For me, it's when the car gets expensive to maintain or I just fancy trying something different.
