what is an 'early' 3.4 996?
Discussion
Ha! Nice one..... I did wonder when he had only had it a year.... as I have been keeping a pretty close eye on the market.
Makes sense.... as the guy had the front painted at the garage when he got it.... and then had some other bits touched up... side skirt, some peeling around windscreen and under rubbers etc.
Bridesmaid for the same ‘bride’ twice eh!

yup...... there are a few 997 kitted cars....... but i wouldnt go for a gen 1 997, and there are VERY few gen 2 997 kitted cars
i can see me ending up with a 996/997 turbo or a 997 gen 2 or even 991 in time......... i'd rather not spend that money... but i will have a 911, and it will be guards red :-)

that car that dammit referred to on the 911 forum looks absolutely sublime............ if only it had been my unicorn guards red !!
i generally hate the grey interior - but what he has done with the seats... and the steering wheel make it look ace, andoslutely fabulous... if someone is in the market for an early aerokitted car (black) i doubt you will ever come across anything better !!
just shows... they are out there !!! just takes a while............................

the price is just insane........ albeit it looks like a decent example.
unless it had a well documented and FULL hartech rebuild (or similar) i cant see how/why anyone woudl pay 30K for it...
pricing is all over the place on them now.... the prices are definitely a little up from where they have been, i think the problem is a few dealers are marketing them at early 20s which makes people thing leggy std cars that are just 'ok' are worth 14k+ and i don't believe they are...
who knows.... either way they are still a lot of car for the money - as long as you are prepared to spend a few quid along the way.
i'm still keeping my eye on the market, but to be fair if i don't get a 996 in the next year or so.. i will likely start to look at gen 2 997 and or turbo 996 as the market for really good 996s seems to be thin.

MOT last month (sailed through), just ordered new tyres today and service next month. I hope my car is grateful
will go have a look........ but if its just a placement engine (with same inherent issues) i would still steer clear and just look at Gen 2sgixermark said:

There is/was a lovely 997.1 C2S in Speed Yellow up for sale with a new engine from Porsche a few years ago. I had a bit of a wobble and thought about changing mine for it. Sadly I'm being sensible as we want to move next year. Being a grown up sucks sometimes This has been quite a thread guys.... thanks for contributing over the past 2! Years.... time does fly.
Whilst I almost bought my unicorn (same car twice actually) and then recently came close to buying the best early 996 I have come across yet (by a long way) albeit it was black... and I think for the right reasons didn’t work out.
So I decided I would gather a few more £ and get a 997.2 next year.
That was, until last Sunday when I spotted a 997.2 in guards red in ashgood.
Deal done Friday, picked up yesterday... happy boy, Tom and the guys at Ashgood were flawless. I bought over the phone with pictures, video & real time walkaround video - Tom was super helpful & easy to deal with.

Coming from an e46 M3 I'd agree.
The 996 feels much smaller and like a sports car where the e46 felt much bigger and more remote, more like a GT really. Never got that pivot from the hips feeling in my e46, where you get that a lot from the 996.
Have either of you had the good fortune to spend time behind the wheel of a CSL ? Far more than the sum of its parts, and transformed the standard M3 into the car it should have been (hopeless brakes aside) The 996 feels much smaller and like a sports car where the e46 felt much bigger and more remote, more like a GT really. I was fortunate to run these two back to back :
The CSL was the first front engined/rear wheel drive car I'd owned/driven in probably 10 years. I was utterly smitten with it.

Stock the 3.6 head will flow a lot more air, and with a 100mm bore will give you 3.9 litres. There's a lot to like there.
I'm unsure whether the 3.4 DME would run the VarioCam+, which would mean that you'd need to address that in order to realise a lot of the benefit.
Our 3.9 uses a 3.6 bottom end with modified 3.4 heads.

absolutely love it Gav....... and considering the money high mileage ones have been fetching recently - this would be an awesome buy !!
if it was red, despite having no need for it... i'd likely buy it and stash it somewhere... i adore the lines of a kitted 996, an dthis has lovely tasteful mods
