These things are never simple and with prices so close between a 996.1, 996.2 and even a 997.1 these days I just don't know why anyone would bother rather than just buying the model they want.

Re that red car above. Someone has put a lot of time, effort and money in to that front end with the cut and shut bumper. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but to me they've taken the worst elements of both generations. blobby .1 aero with the surrender headlights.

I think there are those of us that just didn't know, appreciate or care about the differences to be honest and simply go for a specific car because it simply appeals and/or meets our budget? Initially I was unsure about the aesthetics of the aero car, although I do like the 'taco' wing styling. I bought my own 996 because it was the only half decent example for the money. Now I've had it for a couple of months though and have made a couple of aesthetic tweaks, I really like how it looks and would change anything more, other than a possible swap to a 'ducktail' or 'taco' should one come up that isn't stupidly priced. Quite why the 'ducktail' is so bloody expensive though I don't know?

If values do continue to rise though, it may well mean that the price differential of .1 and .2 cars, or aero to non aero, might increase? Maybe? Both have their fans though I'm sure. smile

Porsche tax at its finest. Although I do believe its not a really simple shape as the inner part still needs to house that fan on the bootlid.

It's because they are soooo sexy.

Also they need to be moulded in two parts and if you're going for exposed carbon than I imagine it takes quite a bit of skill to lay the carbon weave so it all lines up.

Love my CF Duck tail and I went to VT Developments in Holland so it did work out ( a little) cheaper than the UK based suppliers

Still think the rear needs some sort of badge, just not sure what.

I'd do the same so would go FG unless I was planning to go nuts with weight saving. Exposed carbon is a bit too fast n furious for me.

Can't believe there is much difference between GF and CF when it comes to weight of the ducktail. Would be interested to know how much weight it saves compared to the standard spoiler assembly though.

Given how much it hurts when a 6 year old slams the standard engine lid on your fingers, quite a lot.

Do you have photographic evidence of this method of testing said component's weight ? biggrin

Or better still video footage (with audio obviously) ? hehe

Haha, I think all the uppy downy spoiler stuff makes the standard one rather heavy. It certainly felt the best part of 10kg when I was trying to replace the failed lifter strut.

It saves loads! The standard bootlid with the hydraulic spoiler weighs an absolute tonne, I was not expecting how heavy it was when I removed it. To get an idea, disconnect the hydraulic assistance ram and feel the weight, even when still hinged

I never weighed the CF ducktail but I'd be surprised if it was more than a 3-4kg.

RPMT carbon ducktail makes for a 9kg saving allegedly.

so decat and ducktail the best weight loss for the 996 as they're the furthest out back?

I'm still no 100% on the ducktail and deployable spoilers will always be cool to me but I could get on board with a decat. The standard cats weigh a ton.

There is that lightweight - can't type it - exhaust which costs 4 grand and saves something like 20kg. So I think the accountants here would be dividing the cost by the kg saved to get to a £/kg saved figure. I'd start with battery and seats.

maybe the RS decal vibe rather than a badge?
