Picked mine up last night 1998 C2 manual with Sports pack in silver with sunroof delete. Weather was shocking in the way home but loving it so far! The nuggety steering and weight transfer is infectious! It has Dansk back boxes on it and sounds pretty sweet too while still very refined compared with my x-flow Caterham on twin Webers. .

I'll no doubt have a series of newbie questions but guess they're better served by separate threads. Which trickle charger is recommended and where to connect it for example (early 996 a nightmare if the battery discharges?)... I've also ordered a passenger airbag delete but understand this needs coding by a dealer? (Specialist?)

50% stiffer structure, too. Makes the "hewn from granite" descriptions of the air-cooleds a little.....misguided.
The air cooled cars were properly (though expensively) screwed together though. Added to which if you ttted an early air cooled car (or a 964/993) hard, you could pull it back into shape and repair/replace the panels. Do the same with a 996/7 shell and it'll be fit for the crusher (it'll probably save your life in the process though)

Looks like Castlepoint.

I have known Jon Mitchell for about 15 years, he has his workshop over in Ferndown industrial estate (JMG Porsche). Proper Porsche nerd as well so of course I am going to recommend him for any odd jobs on these cars. Always had really good help from the OPC further south in Ferndown as well, and of course our R26 of the PCGB, great group of people.

Have fun.

So far so good! I've got the original ambers ready to go back on to make her completely original. I'm not so keen on the clear lights.

What oil are people running? The car has been on a diet of 5w40 Mobil 1 and the oil pressure seems pretty good hot or cold, I'm only planning road use. I'm guessing that oil is fairly OEM but there might be a better heavier grade modern alternative at 143k miles. I understand Hartech rave about Miller 10w60 with nano tech?

C-Tek here too, mines connected via the 12v ciggy lighter, there is a cut out in the drivers door seal to run the cable through.

Gents,

Quick question for ambers... Currently in abroad (Istanbul) and found this set of amber (front and end lights together) for 996. They are OEM and second hand, the price is nearly 100 GBP. Should I go ahead and buy these or much cheaper options available around?

£100 for the lot? That seems a very good price to me!! Get them bought!

Hi everyone. This is my first post under this username (I was a member years ago but have completely forgotten my login details). I note that the new forum rules do not allow "what's it worth" type threads. But does anybody know a good rule of thumb for valuing early 3.4s at this point? I have a 98 (cable throttle etc.) that I am very reluctant to sell and am likely to lend to a friend for a few years while I'm posted overseas. I'd like to get a rough idea of values in part for his insurance purposes, in part for my own knowledge. Obviously I can see what some sellers are asking for these at at the moment, but that's not quite the same as what they sell for...

Advice gratefully received.

In the meantime, I'll say that I absolutely adore my mine. It gets used and enjoyed regularly, including for a proper annual road trip with friends. Having owned many performance cars (including air cooled 911s), I honestly cannot think of anything that offers so much for so little in the current market. And I am convinced that the early cars, as the really rather unique apex between the old and new, will be much sought after in years to come.

I would say if you have a 98/99 C2 Manual just keep hold of it. In a few years you will kick yourself if you don't

Since you don't want to sell it and just need a price for insurance purposes, why not get an agreed value insurance?
That is what I have with my 997.

Definitely - that is an absolute bargain

Side repeaters are available new for a fairly reasonable price

Exact same spec as mine - although I have a sunroof which I'd rather not.

I wonder if demo cars were spec'd with the sports pack. Mines an Oct 97 and first owner was the supplying dealer.

I bought my '99 C2 manual coupe with 56k miles on it in January for 15k. It's a very tidy car that's had lots of money spent in the last few years, not to mention a full Hartech rebuild last month. I've just tried to add an agreed value of 20k on the insurance policy, but they've come back and said the market value is 15k, which i what they'd pay out in at total loss situation. Looking at the current market, there's no way a like for like replacement would be 15k?
Join PCGB and get a (free) valuation from them - insurers will accept that
I got a valuation via TIPEC in the end. They gave me a value of 22k smile

Wow £22k is a strong price!

For context, I've just had mine valued through PCGB (well, about 4 months ago).

Early 3.4 coupe, manual, 91k miles described by the valuer as 'above average condition inside and out' (although, to be fair, the paintwork ain't pristine). It had a new engine from Porsche at 56k miles.

Value was assessed at £15k. I paid £12-and-a-bit three years ago.

Fun in the West today, my car was pronounced "less rubbish than I was expecting", which I'll take as an honest baseline.

I spent some time parked whilst people shot around:

I agree with advice given to get an agreed valuation. I pay £20 every two years to classic line ins co for an agreed valuation. I have an Ocean Blue '98 C2 manual with full black leather, hard backed sports seats, GT3 rims, £104k miles, very full history and maintained and serviced every single year. Very good condition. Full Hartech rebuild 5k miles ag. Current valuation a £13k but I am quite confident that this will keep rising steadily.
