Well my goddam MF water pump shat itself this afternoon. From full to zero in about 10 seconds. At 156k miles, is there anything else I should be doing while getting the water pump done? Car runs sweet, and is otherwise well serviced and very reliable.

Yeah, mine did that some years back… slowed for traffic after a hoon only to see a massive cloud of steam in the mirror…. I was 3 hours from home, on a Friday evening, in the middle of the Staffordshire countryside. Had to have the car recovered to an Indy in Nottingham…. Who changed the pump Saturday morning. Fecking thing.

Nothing else really needs doing with a pump change… coolant will get done, obviously!

Maybe a new drive belt. But that’s it!

If it hasn’t been done already id do the lower temp thermostat at the same time opens at 71 degrees rather than 83.

The drive belt is about 5k miles old and still looks minty fresh. I might ask them to put a lower temp thermostat in, but the car has absolutely no overheating issues, and doesn't take ages to get up to temp. The failure was completely out of the blue. I thiink it's purely an age thing, the water pump would have been last changed pre-2013.

I’d check a few of the hoses whilst the coolant is out. There’s a small 90 degree bend on the opposite corner from the pump and also the 2 in the area of the pump up to the expansion tank were well past their prime on mine.

Cannot believe it’s not ‘appreciating in value’ or ‘first to see will buy’.

Could it be uncorrected corrosion from the stainless door striker/mild steel body? If so, yikes.

No, I think the wider arches are stuck onto the standard wings underneath and it wasn't done so well and this is starting to show. Who knows if the original arches were just cut out or just cut back or maybe rubbed down and not well rust treated. You can clearly see the join at the other end is starting to come through. My guess is the least painful I think, the new extensions are fiberglass and the join was rubbed down and not well rust treated.

Wow. This is among the worst we have seen of these modified 996.
I don't know where to start, but he even painted the caps of the bleeding nipples red rolleyes

With these I never know what is to be ranked worse: The lets say highly questionable aesthetics, or the craftsmanship, or rather lake of it, that went into the build.
I mean this cost someone a good part of their hard earned cash. Even at their lowest point this probably was a £10k car and the parts must have cost one or two pounds as well.

If over this way, Take the road from glencoe to Kinlochleven, then from there keep going to fort William - it’s deserted and an utterly fantastic road full of curves

I did that actual rood today, crap weather and still fantastic.
Unbelievable that the car is nearly 23 years old, not a creek or single rattle & it just wants to rev. 220 miles in 4.5 hours & still got out feeling fine.

I’ve just seen this listed...it’ll be interesting to see what it makes as a Carrera manual (even with a GT2 type rear wing)...

Sold my SLK55 this week and I'm not, repeat not, looking at replacing it with a 996... nono

However... there's no harm in looking is there!

Apologies if this one has been posted before, but any thoughts on this one https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/listing/13752476

It was sold on Collecting Cars in January (https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/1998-porsche-911-996-carrera-6), and seems to have had a huge amount (over £20k!) spent on it since then. Now up for £19,995.

Not sure why you would spend all that money with no hope of getting it back, but it does look good.

If only I was in the market hehe
