996 cab. Sorry (not sorry).
Discussion
Finally entered the world of 911 ownership. Not sure how it's taken so long, given a lifetime of other interesting cars and bikes, but my "bridging 996" is proving a joy.
Didn't want a cab, but there was logic. It belonged to a mate, so I knew it. It's a '99 3.4 manual with factory LSD and TC, so that's all good. Also had a new engine under warranty from Porsche at 44k, gearbox last year (with RMS/IMS fixes) and has had rads and air con units in the nose replaced in 2016 too. So all the (major) weak points done. New MOT, including four new P Zeros. Hard top, xenons, fob-operated roof. It was also not expensive (in 996 terms) as it's a little cosmetically tired.
So I expected to write here that as the secret plan was to buy a 911 less likely to burp an engine, and thus fool the wife in to thinking they're safe bets before moving up to something tin-topped and quicker, all is well.
But all isn't well: because I'm loving it, despite it being right in the "male menoporsche" sweet spot. Look on my ten year old's face as we came through he lanes with the roof down yesterday was out of this world. Mine wasn't far behind.
And exploring the things a 911 gives is proving brilliant. Feel and feedback from the front, the little pattering about, is like nothing else.
Car was up at Autofarm near me on Friday for service on the roof and a check. She's all good. Few things to do, as you'd expect, but none of them serious or urgent.
Not much point to this post really beyond saying I've wanted one of these things since I was ten and I appear to be as childishly delighted now I've got one as I would have been if you'd given me one back then.
