I've just bought a 997.1 Turbo

What I like is that it's a sensible family car

I'm back to wondering about the possible remap speculated about on the first page. It doesn't seem to wake up until about 3k, even 3.5k, revs. Does that sound right or a little laggy for a twin turbo? When I look at the standard torque curves I find on google it looks late.

Went out for a good run about Oxfordshire with my mate in his V8 Esprit tonight, bloody good night for it.

Fair enough. If it is what it is I can live with it, just wanted to check all was well.

The maps DVD arrived tonight. I popped it in and it asked if I wanted to update. I did and an install status bar appeared. 10% in it stalled for a few seconds, I got distracted for a few more seconds and when I looked back it appeared to have completely finished, but with no positive confirmation. Is there any well of telling? Other than driving to a new road that wasn't there a few years ago ??

Reg number registered today so now I can finally drive with the new plates on.

Well those climate switches weren't really £100 well spent. They are pretty poor quality. The "TEMP" font doesn't look right either. Even with the scratches on the old ones they are barely an improvement. Need to look out for OEM ones.





Still I got to take half the dash apart and work what is in there. Managed to get it all back together without breaking or scratching anything too. Bonus...

I'm getting used to the AWD now. I'm certainly getting used to the power and the manual box. So much for only doing 2-3k per year. I'm doing 170 miles to Leicester tomorrow and that'll be 600 up in 3 weeks!





I'm sure I'm going to keep this a long time. Very sure. But I did bump into this today, so maybe not forever.

Well after a very thorough clean, manual polish and basic wax yesterday it was looking very, very nice indeed (maybe I will leave that 360 where it is). This was a wonderful way to travel 170 miles today and with the Beemer in the garage (though mercifully it doesn't seem as bad as i could have been when the torque convertor has shaken itself free and smacked into the sump for 300 miles) tomorrow is looking like another 70 mile round trip.

I'm treating it as an extended shakedown test whilst the warranty is in place...





And with a large chunk of the M1 limited to 50mph I managed to achieve this over quite an extended (though not at all representative) section



This average did not survive the more thrilling drive down the A43 however.

Glad there was plenty of parking at the other end. No door dents here thank you...

This thread should probably have been in Readers Cars I guess but there we go...

I couldn't stand the fact it pulls slightly to the left anymore so it's at Autofarm today for a geo and, in this weather, the air con really does need to work!

Hopefully driving straight I can start to enjoy the handling more. My Carrera was out when I bought that too, and it made a big difference.

Some lovely air cooled stuff about here as you'd expect...

Well Autofarm was a while ago now and it had an interesting time since. The geo didn’t 100% sort the annoying need to drive with the wheel a couple of degrees off straight, but more on that later.

The car behaved itself and drove nicely for a couple of months and then needed a good deal of servicing as most everything was at the 4 year interval. So Porsche Silverstone did the lot. I decided that having got the car cheap-ish outside the dealer network I’d invest a bit back in the peice of mind of an OPC doing the major service, plugs, brake fluid and belt replace. About £1800 all in (most of that being the plugs).

They do a nicer courtesy car than your average too



However it failed the MOT for what they thought were two relatively minor issues, CV boot and an exhaust leak due to a manifold gasket.

But it wasn’t a manifold gasket leak, it was a hole in the exhaust section of the RHS Turbo.

The good news though was that despite this they felt the car was a good one with little else obvious to worry about. I took the car away because I arranged a deal on the fix with the selling dealer (a long story I won’t go into). It shouldn’t have been too much bother but the availability of turbos right now is very limited. This could have been very frustrating but it was December by then and you know how the weather has been this winter. Shut inside their garage until February was not the worst outcome.

So after they got the required parts it was all fixed early this month.

Sadly I have just had a knee operation due to a skiing injury last month (hence having the time to write this up), so driving her was limited to about 150 miles and that’ll be it until May.

Still she gleamed when I gave her a half decent wash and my downstairs bedroom (where I’m stuck due to being crutches) has a good view of her...

I hadn’t really planned to use it in the worst of the winter anyway, unlike this brave person



Although when my daily, a 330ci e46 kicked the bucket it might have been handy



Instead the hiring of a GLC convinced my wife an SUV of sorts would be good, I kind of agreed, hence this

I like the sound of the sound of that, but it’ll be a long way down the list of spring maintenance and possible minor mods. Here’s the current list of jobs:

Engine mount check/probable change
Transmission mount check
Bank 2 O2 sensor change, as necessary (came on twice after sitting but not recent drives)
Transmission oil (12 year job)
Front disks and pads
Refit rear light (2 min job)
Air Con Condensor
Small scratch by offside air intake
Tiny paintless ding on rear wheel arch

FF Shift kit
Double din head unit
15mm Rear spacers
5mm Front spacers

Exhaust is a pipe dream at the moment (get it? )
