Knowing that retailers now want to know as much as possible about their customers, does the Contactless Clubcard (Wireless) enable customer activity to be monitored within the stores ?

No more than the normal barcode cards

It enables it, but getting anyone to admit doing it might be tricky....

Contactless payments/cards use RFID (cards) or NFC (apple-pay, android pay or banking apps that use the phone)

NFC has a range of about 20cm.

RFID used in cards has a range of about 10cm at most. They need to meet ISO/IEC 14443 which specifies the frequency used and thus the range. These are classed as 'priximity cards'

There is another standard for 'vicinity cards' which is what's used in ski-passes for example. These comply with ISO/IEC 15693 and have a range of up to 50cm.

I'm assuming the tesco cards are proximity so, theoretically it's possible to 'track' you in the store, but only if you're less than 10cm away from any sensors.

Thank you all, for your answers.

I am not someone who is paranoid about the shopping privacy aspect, because I am not easily tempted by so called bargains.
However, I am always interested in new technology and how it can be used for business.

My wife got one of these through the other day. I was surprised that I didn't, considering it is a joint club card account.

I got 2 sent to me a week apart, so I guess I have a joint account with myself.

Wonder how they knew I had a split personality?

To answer the OP, most customer & queue activity monitoring is done by monitoring Bluetooth signals from mobiles. Usually it's anonymous.

Could Tesco tie your clubcard to your bluetooth identifier? Probably, but only if you dwelled long enough at the till to tie the two together. Should they? I think the Information Commissioner would have something to say about that.

I do, although I tent to use the app on my iPhone, rather than carrying an extra card around.

Little tip. Take a photo of your clubcard on your phone and add it to your favourites so its easy to find... use that to scan in the shop.

Good idea but the Clubcard App already gives you the option of scanning the standard Barcode or the QR code.

It does... but for some reason (unless they sorted it out) the app looses its account details every time the app updates, and this became a ball ache... easier just to have the photo of the card to hand than to have to piss about logging in etc

Fair enough but I have no such issues with the App.

I've not had issues with the app either, I've also set it to apper in my "Wallet" and on the homescreen when I'm at the stores I visit regularly.

People trying to use these "scan your phone" apps wind me up at work (supermarket petrol station). Our scanners can't read barcodes on phone screens. I have to explain this to the customer, and tell them they will have to read the card number out for me to type in. Annoying waste of time when there's a queue.

We don't have contactless pinpads either. We've put a big sticker saying as much on each pinpad, but customers still stand there tapping their cards, and I have to explain that they will have to use chip&pin.

I find contactless useful but pain if you fill up car ie over £30 limit or as I find if use loads of times is rejected and have to use chip and pin, shopkeeper told me normally every 7 times need chip and pin

I can understand your frustration but it's hardly the customer's fault if your systems are not up to date.

If you've got a notice up and their not reading it, thenbthat's a totally different matter. I know my local Sainsburys petrol station has a notice up says 'it's not contactless"

Seeing as this is Finance, anyone who frequently uses a Clubcard should see if the Tesco credit card is for them. More points = more better. There aren't many good cashback cards around these days, so might as well take the Clubcard points.

You can use contactless over £30 with Apple pay on most terminals.
