Having written off my beloved mx-5 recently (not my fault for the record) I'm looking to upgrade for just under £6000
I want a sports car, but it also has to be a daily that can cope with 50 mile of autobahn a day, every day.
Not fussed about creature comforts and don't need much boot space.
Z4, S2000, Boxster or something I've missed???

You won't get a decent S2K for 6k. Boxers are just about in budget but I can't imagine you'd get a great example at that price.

MR2?

I've had a 2004 3.0i Z4 since 2009. Its not such a good pure driving experience as the Boxster or the S2000 but I would choose it for its greater reliability/looks/interior than the Boxster and more relaxed motorway cruising compared than the S2000. The 3.0i M54 is a lovely engine and you can get a very nice low mileage car for 6K. Mine is probably worth 6k ish and has only just passed 30k miles.

Mine returns high 30's to the gallon on the motorway too which is a bonus for a 3.0 petrol car.

You've missed the S2000 by quite a few years. They have actually become a classic car and fetch strong money.

A 2ltr N/A race engine producing 254bhp @9,000 stick shift too rwd sports car.

How about
a Saab 900 Turbo timeless
TVR chimera - scratch that they have gone up
Porsche 944 lux
BMW 645i... is you are super lucky.

Another MX-5?

Yes, I went to have a look at an s2000 up for £5.5k recently. Looked good in the photos but in the flesh it was very tired and grubby. I suspect it was typical of what to expect at that price point so gave up.

Can you sneak a 370Z into budget?

Not unless the budget is doubled

Having been through a 350Z, a Cayman and now in a Z4 I would say for the money the 350Z is your best bet.

IMO you need to spend a lot more money to get into something a bit good for both the Cayman/Boxter (which I didn't) and the Z4 (which I did).

The 350Z is a bit agricultural at times, but still looks cracking, has hilarious handling, bags of power and for the money is hard to beat.

Unless of course you need to have a hairdresser spec car, in which case I would say stretch to an E89 Z4 - having a proper roof when you need it is the way to go.

Z4 Coupe will be towards the top end of your budget if you can stretch a bit, good cruiser, quick enough and good MPG. Have used mine for a similar commute over the last year and it's a nice enough place to be.

Mine's up for sale in the PH classifieds if you're UK based.
