I driven a few 996 GT2's, and they can be a little twitchy especially in the wet eek

I [think I] read they were delivered from factory with some odd ball geo. Could this help or is it just simple physics - 500bhp through 2 very wide tyres and a light car?

Geo on the 997 I drove seemed fine, it was more the insane power delivery, although I do recall something similar to what you're saying about the 996 needing fettling.

Lovely little (tiny compared to later 911's) busses. Good stiff chassis, analogue driving experience and very tunable with bits off the shelf. You cant really go wrong with one.

I'll add a qualifier to say I'm talking about a nationwide blanket ban on ICE, rather then targeted city-centre restrictions like we're already seeing, and I'll even add "not in my lifetime" at a push, but I'll stand by the assertion there won't be a full ban.

There won't need to be.

New tech will make ICE obsolete in new vehicles, the number of ICE vehicles in regular use on the road will dwindle to almost nothing, at which point their emissions contribution will be negligible and nobody will care. Exactly the same way machines have replaced horses. Some roads are not open to horses, but there's no appetite for a total ban. The new network of intelligent super-highways will only be open to fully-autonomous cars, but what's the benefit of banning an old Porsche from some deserted country backroad ? It's just not worth doing.

Black boxes, insurance, maybe. So as I said, it'll get more expensive to keep driving our old cars, but we'll still be allowed. The completely driverless utopia isn't coming yet.

This is going to sound dreadfully Swiss Tony meets 1970's sexist car journo, but those really do not resemble anything other than a gorgeously, athletically curvy set of female hips.

Pinky Lai got it SPOT on.

The end.

  • my footnote on the things I like most about the 996 exterior form: the roof line. The way the lights, bonnet and wings intersect. The way the rear ‘haunch’ drops down to the rear lights giving the car hips, but without a hyena type stance. The door/window line that gracefully swings down the car. The swoopy windscreen that modernises the 911 signature form without stretching the point too far. The solidity of the car - the glasshouse is in perfect proportion to the metal, the car has visual weight without appearing amorphous or blobby. Basically, it’s aged extremely well!

Excuse the pic, Gen 1 back in 2000. Hated it. Geo way out and was beyond awful to drive, let alone look at. Then geo sorted and was very connected. Proper handful, but exciting, the most exciting RS I've had bar the aircooled. Never looked back when parked up though...
