the Sport designs are utter sods to keep clean !
Do try the Winters though. I've been astonished how the car (Targa4) does in snotty slushy rural winters.
I'm not too fussed about the car getting dirty most of the time. So my wheels are dirty most of the time..Do try the Winters though. I've been astonished how the car (Targa4) does in snotty slushy rural winters.
That said, recently I spent a couple of hours machine polishing the car and found those melamine foam sponges to be really, really great for cleaning the wheels! Not needing aggressive substances is a plus too!
For when it is really bad weather, I just take the Audi S4 (just before the C2 in my above pic). Poor car hasn't been used much since I got the Porsche

I'm up to 85k and fear its worth £427 only.
200,000 miles......
(as my Indy says - any kudos / inflated price in low mileage is gone. Drive on !)
In a 997.1 c2?200,000 miles......

Wow. Mine's on 78k I think. I was starting to get worried about big bills separate from IMS/bore score
What sort of bills have you had?
I love mine. It's manual and such a pleasure to drive. Feels special every time about 15 months and 16k miles in
You are quite right, the engine is not the original one.
It's an early 997.1 C2 manual, with sports pack (-20mm + LSD + 19" sports design), full leather, cruise and that's it.
(no nav, no PASM, no Xenons, no anything)
@ 157'000km (in 2012) the car suffered from a terminal IMS failure.
Luckily the car had the extended Porsche warranty and the engine was replaced with the latest IMS design M96 engine (larger, non replaceable bearing).
So the engine has only 154'000km on it ( only 3'000km less than it went pop before)
I did the usual checks for any noise and had a good look at the left exhaust tip and could not see any sign of bore scoring. I had no boroscope (or any other professional inspection) done before purchase... From a private seller btw, so no warranties or comeback whatsoever.
I have a very relaxed attitude towards these things...
That was in May this year. Since then I did a small inspection (according to the Porsche schedule) incl. oil/filter, air filter, cabin filter, computer readout, etc. myself and that's it atm. The last big inspection at a specialist (incl. brake fluid, spark plugs, aux belts, cats) has been at the end of 2016.
I have an inch thick folder with all the receipts... A lot has been done to keep it in tip top condition! Each year it had two inspections, a small and a major one done, since it covered over 20k miles p.a.
Up until now there are no signs of bore scoring. No noise and no oil consumption whatsoever over 5k miles.
"What if it explodes tomorrow" I hear you ask. Well that is the problem of future me. I'm sure he will deal with it in one way or another. Until then today me keeps racking up those miles!
With a certain mileage it's about how much can you add and not how little! A much more enjoyable experience
Hello All,
I've been in the 981 and Aston side a bit, so I am new here !
I too have a 997.1 C2S, and it is to date one of my favourites !
The 6 speed is such a joy !
The steering, the sound of the motor as it changes note from 6000 onwards !
It is just magic. I am addicted ! Don't ever get rid of yours if you can help it. That's how I feel about mine.
Mine is a 2005, I've had it for 6 years now and there's no parting ( 52K kilo's ).

I took a long time in deciding which 911 to get as a first time buyer but it had to be a 997, simply the best looking by a long way to my eye. And then it was a decision as to which model which was harder. In the end I went for a Turbo S, mainly because of performance and rarity (only a couple of hundred gen 2 in the UK as I understand) I certainly never saw another one the whole time I had it, almost four years before selling a couple of months ago. Lots of 997's but only one other turbo S seen on this thread.
I loved the wide rear with the inlets, every time i looked in the door mirrors that's what i would see. Performance was just sensational, handling of the four wheel drive not quite to my taste at times. Tyre noise at speed on long journeys another issue, especially for passengers.
Eventually, torn between not wanting the mileage to get too high and the frustration of not using it enough led me to sell it. Still greatly missed, but very glad to have had the good fortune to have owned such an iconic car.
And centre lock wheels, just the best!

There's some lovely cars on this thread...
I'm looking forward to hitting 100k miles in the next six months or so, safe in the knowledge that it's not really depreciating due to mileage any longer. Mind you, any potential saving is offset by expenses like new brake hard-lines and clutch in the past year. Original engine still going strong too - oil consumption still reducing with age to boot (~12k miles per litre)!

Nearly 4 years into this manual and it just keeps getting better. Switch to Cup tyres (thanks Big E) has moved the game up a few notches. Car is just awesome.

Interesting! I've got Bridgestone's on my GTS manual coupe....been wondering about a change and it's not a daily driver so Cup's could work!
Do it now!I put up with my old tyres for way too long and only now realise what i was missing out on. They are quieter, better ride, more grip, more direct with less understeer. Car feels super agile and i have removed doing suspension mods from my wish list, the car just doesn't need it now.
Only downside is standing water aparently but my car rarely goes out if weather is really bad and if I do I would just slow down! I would probably go for Pilot Sport 4 next time as these are reportedly just as good on road with the benefit of great standing water performance, so would go that route if I were you.
