Starting to look at a possible 997 purchase.

My wife likes the look of a new Tesla Model 3 but I am looking at the 3 year cost of owning one of those compared to something like a 997. Difficult to justify the Tesla when you look at the numbers. We only do short journeys for leisure and never drive for business. We also only need one car for the household and rarely need much luggage space. Had a 993 back in the day so I have always been fond of them. The only real unknown is how much a 15 year old Porsche will cost in servicing and upkeep.

I would much rather have a tidy 911 on the drive rather than the impressive but rather anodyne Tesla.

My local Porsche Indy (who is very good), puts it like this: "put £20 a week away each week - services for 997 are every two years and the money built up over 2 years will cover the service costs and a few other things".

A new Tesla will lose £15k in the first year, £10k in the second year that is £240 a week.....minimum!

Oh and buy a good 997 and I reckon you will not lose any value on the purchase cost + in the Porsche you will have fun - no brainer really?

Given the choice between a battery powered car or a 997 Flat 6 screamer I’d be all over a 911 !

There will be a time when we are forced to buy battery powered alternatives so for the here and now Again 911.

As mentioned above buying a used 997 will save you money over the next 3 years so I’d say the only model out of your price point and as it’s only got 2 seats the RS, GTS is an obvious choice, I bought a .1 C4S despite all the experts / Mystic Meg predictions scare mongers and those of a nervous disposition predicting that the engine would blow up, melt and implode, so far it’s been fine, it’s an 07 so larger bearing, all that was irrelevant as I wanted wide body, 4WD, I didn’t want a Turbo as literally every car I’ve had over 20 years has had a turbo ! I needed a rear seat although my little one is now 6’4” !

So bare that in mind, they don’t fit in there for long !

I’d say you could stretch to a 991 with a Tesla budget ?

Which ever way, it’s your choice and don’t be put off by some idiots who can’t sleep at night by proxy over some one else’s purchase ! Besides you could go 3.9 if it does implode ?

And that has to be a positive ?

Very different choices to say the least..

I have driven most of the EVs including Teslas and the Taycan Turbo S. Amazingly impressive things.

Yet ,when I climb into my 13 year old 7.1RS with its vintage nav system, hydraulic steering,no stability control, heavy clutch and nervous wet handling, I am immediately engaged and stay that way. Any 997 is a much more tactile car. I like the 997 C4S personally of the non GT cars.

30k would be the limit I would have thought so it would have to be a 997 I guess at that money. the Tesla was always going to be a lease or a PCP.

Just have to convince the wife which won't be easy as she will be driving it just as much as me. She used to admire them a few years ago so maybe that spark is still there.

The only real blocker is that I used to hate the entire process of buying a used car. Always that fear that the salesman/owner is selling you a mutt.

One pedestrian thing to be aware of is how dated all of the electronics are...no bluetooth, silly little map, no Apple or other interfaces, obsolete nav, no voice control and of course none of the modern reversing cameras, adaptive cruise control and so on.

I know this is PH and we only care about raw white knuckle excitement ( as world class driver, powerfully built director and carrier of my own custard tin I can confirm this), but when I do drive my 997 I notice this.

I have retrofitted Bluetooth but the 997 does not have a Porsche Classic retrofit yet, so you have to go aftermarket if this matters. The Tesla OTOH is just plugged into the web in myriad ways.

Not hard to retrofit a double din apple play DAB with everything you need. Mine works perfectly for phone, Bluetooth, Maps, music, etc

I'm selling this if anyone is interested. It will give us an idea on the state of the market.

Your points on the 997 are bang on, but you're way wrong on the value of a 2nd hand Tesla. Any Model 3 will lose maybe £3k in it's first year at the absolute maximum, and in a lot of cases, you'll lose next to nothing. Tesla's have some of the best depreciation on the market.

Me too, I have retrofitted a Bluetooth that works phenomenally well. Since I know the road 9.5 out of 10 journeys, I don't need sat nav very often. When I do, I have my phone just below the HVAC resting on the transmission tunnel. Other than spirited driving, it stays where it should. I use the Waze, Navigon or Google maps app with sound enabled. Also running in the background is a radar app that warns me of speed traps.

(BTW my 997 is an odd spec with no sat nav from the factory. I do have the PCM 2.1 with the screen and everything, but no gps module.)

Now I just need to run a radio app or a podcast and I'm good to go. Since all is streamed from the same device, the interaction of three apps running with audio out works really well.

I have also experimented with having the phone resting on the steering wheel column in the line of sight, but in the 997 I prefer it as described above.

No rear view camera tough. Heck, I don't even have parking sensors!!

I really like the 997 for what it is, a very simple sports car that still drives beautifully and is so well engineered, but that is still a very analogue car.

It never occurred to me that the inability to listen to DAB radio or yap on the phone impaired my drive to here in this

In my view their absence enhances my 997 experience

I am happy to bow to someone who follow's Tesla second hand values, no worries.

I do think my figures are correct for more run of mill new vehicles though?

Totally agree, enjoy the car for the era it was design within and the experience it offers today...

2 being used as they should be earlier this week.

Mine (RS at the back) was in storage for 5 years with its previous owner.. it was such a waste to keep it locked up...

I don't think I would miss any of that.

I have had top electronics on the last few cars I have had. Apple car play etc. Never used any of them, I don't even connect to our latest car, I use the radio and that's it. If I need to use sat nav I just start google maps on my phone and listen to the instructions - less faff
