I wasn't clear in my earlier post - I was referring to a manual GT4 with the 4.0L GT3 engine, which is a variant which has been discussed/ rumoured on various forums. A detuned version of that same engine - yes may well be and would be step up on the current GT4 in that it's more powerful and a GT dept engine rather than "stock" 911.
The next GT4 I doubt very much will come with the 4 litre from the GT3. Porsche are predictable mostly so they will keep it as it is with a road car engine.
My mole has told me that a Spyder chassis exists with a 4 litre unit but its a larger capacity version of the current engine, not a GT3 engine with less power.

In terms of when will we see it, well it was released with the 991RS at Geneva and the .2 of that is being released at Geneva I would imagine but we've not seen a GT4 testing so I doubt it will be then. Current atmospheric models need to be released before I think about August before the new emissions regulations come into play in Sept 2018. They are apparently designing a new catalyst which is supposed to help with the emissions so if they are successful with this, they might not be in such a hurry to realise the new GT4 so could either be Frankfurt 2018 or Geneva 2019. I am sure porsche will find a way but there is no doubt that they are feeling the heat at the moment with both petrol and diesel units having to comply with tougher regulations.

Confirmed with OPC this afternoon that this is a non-limited option on current GT3 allocations. So... no new cars.

Boo.

Cheers, always intended to as spec'd manual with comfy seats and no scaffolding, great move by Porsche to do this for people who want to drive but not necessarily track their cars

Agree - no news yet other than I also got conf that the touring spec is just that - a spec update : so 2018 GT3 allocation will be as previous - i.e. no more cars than b4 frown

Just had a play on the configurator and watched the unveiling - I have to say it doesn't do it for me - my imaginary spec still remains manual with with the wing smile

I think I'm in the same camp...go big or go home. It'll be my first GT3 and I feel like I need a "proper" one. If I had an RS already in the garage I might make a different decision. Also some of the brighter colours I don't think suit the car as well without the wing.

Yep - I got all excited by APs comments about it being not limited by volume and spoke to my OPC (Edinburgh) first thing this morning. They confirmed no more cars, just a spec option on existing second batch cars.....Oh well, such is life!

Customer: I've heard of this touring pack GT3, will this mean I've a chance of getting one now as I've not been allocated anything yet as I really want one?
Porsche Salesman: *sucks air through teeth* Sorry sir, we aren't getting anymore GT3's as this is only an option on the current allocations which are sadly all spoken for.
Customer: But but but.....AP said it wasn't limited????
Porsche Salesman: It's not limited in as far as we can sell as many as we want.....of the cars allocated to us.
Customer: Ok, I'm totally confused now. Can I have a car?
Porsche salesman: No sir I'm afraid not but why not pop down and try a 911 GTS or Turbo. Those are much better propositions in my opinion.

Excuse the ignorance, but what is the real difference between the GT3 Touring and the 911R?

Aside from (theoretical) availability, is it the lack of carbon panels?

Engine, Carbon panels, MAG roof, ltd ed car, single mass flywheel, plastic rear window, less sound insulation. 70KG lighter than the normal GT3

lots the new GT3 touring has the new engine based from the RSR.

the R has the 991.1 RS engine with lower rev limit and the choice of lightweight flywheel or standard.

The new engine is a whole new back to 9krevs race engine with loads more torque.
