Rain-X or other?
Discussion
Hi ,
I have just bought a car with a sloping rear window, which doesn't have a rear windscreen wiper....
Can anyone recommend a substance that I can apply to try to minimise the amount of rain that will sit on the screen? I know of Rain-X - is that the go-to product or is there better?
Thanks

Ultra Glaco by Soft99 (the same people who make Fusso sealant) works well and is much easier to apply than RainX. I'd recommend you buy the pre-cleaning wipes from the same shop, they're only a couple of quid and help the application last longer.
Just use a pre-cleaning wipe over the screen, wait for the cleaning solvent to turn to dry powder, and wipe off. Then do the same with the Ultra Glaco. It's in a bottle like roll on deodorant or shoe polish. Just wipe it over the screen, wait the required number of minutes and then gently wipe away the remaining powdery residue. No effort involved - unlike RainX lol.

Glass sealants don't really work below ~30mph (wind blows the beads away), and they rarely last more than a few weeks (despite manufacturer claims), so don't get your hopes too high.
Make sure the glass surface is ultra-clean, so the sealant sticks as strongly as possible.
Probably best to buy a kit, so you get cleaner + sealer in one convenient package.
Something like Gyeon has a reasonable rep.

On non wiped glass, a decent glass sealant will last a year easily. GTechniq G1 is hugely durable but not as hydrophobic as their G5 product. Both together should see a very long time of rolling beads.
As mentioned, the trick is spotlessly clean glass. That will mean washing it, claying it, wire wooling it (or razor blading it if you're really going to town) polishing it, then cleaning it again with IPA, then applying the sealant.

I’ve always used Rain X, there are other more expensive options etc but at £7 for a bottle that’ll easily last through winter I just stick with what I know.I have just bought a car with a sloping rear window, which doesn't have a rear windscreen wiper....

You want a product which is efficient at as low a speed as possible given it's on the back of the car without a wiper so durability shouldn't be the priority.
Gtechniq G5 or Carpro Flyby30 both excellent in this regard, Rain-x not far behind to be fair.
As ever prep is key so make sure you deep clean the glass thoroughly first before application using something like Carpro Ceriglass ideally or AG glass polish if you want to buy on the high street.
cheers
