Not only that but much of the valuable history is around what has been replaced. My lower mileage 1998 car has had a new gearbox, new clutch, new cylinder head, new IMS, new brake lines, new RMS, many new suspension parts among other things... plus as others have said, all work should be backed up with verifiable receipts.

But yours is possibly a £23k car rather than a £9k car in OP’s case.
When I say lower mileage, mine has still done 144k! Please PM me by all means if you've got £23k!!!! but it's not really on the market wink

There are other cars out there with well in excess of 200k miles so I keep a reserve fund and my fingers crossed. I have to say that switching to Miller's NT+ oil has done wonders for engine smoothness. I certainly don't worry about using the car, if it's worth something when I come to sell it then great. Much of the joy of these cars is their usability, not worrying about putting miles on them. The higher running costs are quite likely to be offset by retained value should I ever part with it.

I don’t understand the ‘walk away’ advice. It’s a 9k car! How much do you think, a 160k miles 996 with fully stamped history albeit no receipts, is worth?
To me, sub 9k. I think you'd be looking at an engine rebuild pretty quickly. Which is another 9k minimum.

I'd much sooner get an 80k car for 14k which are fairly common and so can pick and choose.
To you yes, but not to the market. Also 80k car for £14k are not common; have you looked at the Classified lately?

How many sub £15k (to allow the buyer knocking £1k off) manual coupe are there on PH? Four. And none of them has fewer then £102k miles.

As mentioned all 996s have risks, be it a 80k car or 160k; I think anyone thinking otherwise have not done their homework, and are, dare I say it, naive. (Obviously not in OP’s case hence starting this thread)

My point was it’d be unrealistic to expect finding a car with all the work done (as described in your post for your car) for £9k.

I’m guessing you didn’t pay £9k for your car, unless it was from a few years ago when the market was at its bottom, and that your car got to this point through ‘rolling restoration’ by you / previous owners. Perhaps OP’s car has had a few things done over the years, perhaps not. We don’t know, and it makes a good thread. smile

And 6 on autotrader some with under 100k miles.
I agree all have risks and I'm a big believer that a 50k car is not necessarily better than a 100k miles car - condition and history is much more important. But there are loads of 100k cars about. There are barely any 150k+ which either means they haven't generally got there yet, or they don't often make it.

I'm just saying, if I were to get a high miles (150k+) car I'd want a lot of invoices with it showing what's been replaced. I'm also lucky that I got my 996 for £9k with 102k miles on it
