The car was fairly new if I recall correctly.I actually thought I may be getting mixed up as I have driven a lot of cars over the years so had a quick look at some of the original road test reviews ,words like 'hard' and 'jiggles about a lot' were used in describing the ride.
Interestingly Harris wrote a piece about the car and pointed out that the first gen of it rode much nicer than the 2nd gen so maybe the one I drove was a later car.
Anyway if people love it fine,I understand much of the appeal but it was not something I enjoyed driving at the time.
It's never going to be a classic Citroen DS on hydropneumatic suspension, but I always felt most journos were poorly qualified to judge the 6 GT3.Interestingly Harris wrote a piece about the car and pointed out that the first gen of it rode much nicer than the 2nd gen so maybe the one I drove was a later car.

I drove the then-new 997 C2 with PASM back to back for a few hours with my then-standard 996 GT3 (mk 2) on fast but fairly challenging road surfaces (surface imperfections, cambers and crowns), and the 6 on standard passive dampers was significantly better damped than the 7 in either the sport or comfort setting (sport was just plain hard and unsophisticated, comfort was wallowy). The 7 (non-GT3 so you'd expect it to be tuned for comfort not racing) was all over the place at speed, the 6 took it in its stride.
Had a couple of Gen 1 997 GT3’s, I think your choice of word in unsophisticated is pretty much perfect. I bought the second example thinking it would make a good continent crusher, and found myself disappointed with how noisy and harsh it was. As you said, a completely standard 996 GT3 somehow seemed more refined.
Lemming wasn’t joking.

He’ll need to sort the poor gear ratios, the anti-roll bars (which are just “wrong”), the engine lacking in torque (anywhere) the horrendous understeer, replace the hopeless dampers and weak diff (and brace himself for a £30k refurbishment bill) before he even starts to consider enjoying it J !!Slippydiff said:

Or he could buy a Cayman R or 2 and be done with it Slippydiff said:

Or failing that he could try to master the art of driving a slightly more analogue 911 ...or even find some roads better suited to the GT3 (though I can’t remember the last time I found myself behind the wheel of a 996/7 GT3 and thought « “well this road is wholly unsuited to my current mode of transport ...” but then as others have said, I don’t feel the need to drive everywhere bouncing off the rev limiter in every gear to get my kicks behind the wheel... maybe I’m missing something ???
