Is there specific tape?

The splitter that came off had some ineffective tape. Perhaps that's why it fell off as soon as it was knocked.
You can buy it from your OPC, IIRC it's about £20 a roll.

I lost my front splitter on the way back from Spa. So bought a new one and used tape as well as plastic fixings. Then, on my way back from Le Mans I had another splitter issue in Rouen so new splitter is damaged...looks very "used" but suits the character of the car. Will get another for "best" at some point.

I used 3m double sided foam tape, bout a mm thick.

I hit a badger a couple of months ago and suffered the same road rash you did. It might be a placebo but the front end feels lighter without it on (ive been lazy and not put it back on)

Don’t think it is placebo. Mine came off at zandvoort and I thought for a bit of plastic it would have no real impact. However it does make a small but noticeable difference to front end grip on a circuit imv.

When I used to sprint and hillclimb my TVR Griffith, the tiny (you almost need to be on hands and knees to see it) splitter under the nose made a huge difference. On that car too, they were vulnerable, but the word was they certainly did add stability at speed. I had an extended one made up by the lads in our engineering shop at work and it was a significant improvement.

As for the both Alfapork, I have just two things to say, all of course IMHO:
  1. A car never feels like it's 'yours' until you've done a repair, modification or botch.
  2. No cable ties used in your fix - is dissappoint.

OK guys, so we are about 2k miles into 996.2 GT3 ownership, including a road trip to Spa to race in the 24hr!

Some thoughts:

1. I don't know why people think this is a hard car to live with. Perfect road trip car, loads of luggage space without the cage, fine on euro autoroutes - and 30mpg!
2. Having said that, ride is choppy unless billard smooth over 80mph, and also front end gets very pointy as you go faster. I am wondering if that is the front damper refresh (still original - 30k miles) and the as reported in PPI rear toe link bushes and front coffin arm bushes starting to delaminate. Although it tracks perfectly and brakes fully in a straight line.
3. Brakes - if you lean on them there is a droning noise. I wonder if this is normal or the pad type.
4. Clutch - slight, and I mean slight, judder on take up
5. Has anyone had a Wayne Scofield remap on one of these? Worth it? Expected results?
6. Repaired front splitter is already dead again. I have an RS one to put back on.

Given the age of these cars and based on my knowledge of my 996 turbo, the cumulative effects of gradual wear and tear on suspension consumables can be considerable. In this regard, I can highly recommend a trip to Center Gravity, who are so well versed in all of this they will likely have all of the requisite bits on the shelf already.

Yup don't worry it will be paying a visit to Chris and chums. Although I'll whip the dampers myself off and get them rebuilt at Bilstein direct as we have a trade account.

Clutch on my 997 has a bit of judder on take up in reverse, but not pulling away.

Great stuff!

Does it ‘feel’ like to you that it would benefit from a remap? Mk2 engines are generally very strong, perhaps get it on a roller first?

Edit to add, great job on the splitter.

That can be a sign the diff is worn. Or the clutch of course. I ended up doing both. And the clutch made no difference while fresh plates in the diff (I upgraded) fixed it. I should have done it the other way around frown
This was at 25k with some track work.

Just to smooth out a couple of lumps.

I managed to rip it off 3 times on the trip. RS splitter now added!

I've also managed to fit one of those Bluetooth optical units to the Becker head unit, without cutting into the factory wiring. It emulates the CD changer, and was about £120 from Amazon, so much cheaper than a Denison... Works well and you can control it with the OEM head unit! Did need to persuade the OPC to recode the radio to get it to work.

Finally, when I shut the car down after a run, the evil water cooling burbles and gargles like a radiator with air in it. I know these engines are really just giant kettles, but is this just a standard characteristic? Coolant level is fine, doesn't overheat and no gunk anywhere.

No noises like this on my other Mezger - just a massive fan!!

Good call. It does not judder one bit in forward gears.

The car's done 31k and, being a Clubsport, I'd expect (hope) a good few of those it has enjoyed on track. A refresh on the diff is right up there on the "to do list" prior to 2019, along with geometry check and a new set of discs and pads. Just got to decide whether to go Surface Transform carbon or Alcon steel...

Yes. Both my 996 turbo and my current 997 GT3 did/do this.

I do love the Mezger's lack of manners and refinement. hehe
