Best thing about this thread? A few old names that hardly ever post anymore, takes me back to when I had my 997.2GTS - happy days!

Here's a tip for getting the best from the GTS..Avoid sport mode at all costs and go straight to sport plus to avoid the fake pops and farts, and slip the lever across to manual. This configuration enhances throttle response, speeds up manual gear changes and without the contrived noises sounds better..
As a road car i think i prefer it to the GT3.

That's just plain rude.

It’s plain rude and it’s his only contribution to PH in the last yea looking at his post history. Enough said.

Come on no need to create arguments on here, let’s get back to all talking about cars as this is what lead us all to this forumsmile

FWIW i think P'heads would be a lot less entertaining if Mr D stopped posting..He obviously has a great deal of knowledge and experience on sports cars.Plus he's willing to share them with us like minded enthusiast..
OTOT he's a true car enthusiast and AFAIK never flipped a car for profit in his life..I share all these traits so the guy above was well out of order and an example on how threads denigrate to spiteful personal insults..!

+1

I also find his posts entertaining even if he might go too far on occasion. I'm also 100% with him on the reasons we love these cars. I.e a screaming n/a flat six with a manual gearbox!

Nothing wrong with strong debate either. Just leave the personal insults out please

Back on topic, what are people’s thoughts on sharing set up data?

I understand the desire for companies to want to try and monetise their experience but twice we’ve needed to reset or check the alignment on the 997.1RS and twice the companies refused to give out the settings to which they’ve adjusted the car to.

Unfortunately it’s not always practical to go to whoever did the job for a check-up and you’re left with then needing to start again.

Does anyone have a database of such settings?

I Agree, it would be sad place if we all liked the same things and had the same views. Like a few on here I have been out with Mr D on a few events and been happy to give him a few Px laps on track days. He's as much as an enthusiast as any of us.

Good Point, just after a single track day the settings can move around massively.

This is what I started with on one track day on my GT3.2 PDK

And this is what I ended up with after the event.

He presents his opinion as fact and is very insulting on a general basis to anyone who does not share his subjective preferences .
He often talks a lot of sense but ruins it by posting like a 10 year old .

I'd not be paying for the re-work which I assumed you didn't?

I cannot understand why any company would not provide the before and after measurements. I would refuse to pay for a geo that I had no idea what settings have been applied. I've never NOT had the set up information provided as matter of course without asking.

These are not race cars with lap time advantages being leaked out to the competition after all. People suggesting they will be burnt at the stake if they share set up data that 'normal' people can't have access to is just a load of cobblers.

The majority of tuners for a 911 platform will have broadly similar set up for the track.

And if the company setting your car up doesn't ask what you want from the set up, and what bias from the car you prefer, how can they hope to tailor it for your particular needs.

There used to be a whole heap of people and knowledge around these parts, the 911uk forum doesn't seem too populated. Is there any other forums that should be a must visit?

Rennlist I used to be a member of, but I don't recall my log in and I did feel it was very USA-centric.

We don't see the same old faces on track these days (or fewer anyway), has the investor market decimated the enthusiast one?
Hi Craig, we are all still bombing about Scotland (and further afield) on our runs same as always (well since 2010), you're more than welcome to come back any time, would be great to see you! Some of the guys started a Scottish site called Tartan Tarmac, but it's basically the old Pistonheads crew.

Hardly any of us post on Pistonheads very often now though for the unpleasant reasons detailed above, just lurk to see if any old names pop up like yersel ;-)

For piece of mind I have my cars inspected on a ramp at an OPC after every track day, to check brake pads, hoses, any leaks etc. For this I pay a pre agreed fixed fee less any parts. This also includes a Geo check and re-set if required. Sometimes I win some times they do, as in very little work is required. I just think this is good practice taking into account how hard the cars get driven .

That's belt and braces.

Personally I usually pump the back tyres up, check the oil drive home and put it in the shed, and repeat, but then I probably don't drive as hard as you do.

Be interested in what sort of issues you've seen with your preventative maintenance.

^This.

Had a quick geometry set up - just to check - done by Sports & Classic as part of a service when I got my 996 turbo. It was based on how I'd told them the car would be used.

A year or so later, chasing the source of a small judder under braking, it went in to Center Gravity. A few bits, like top mounts and lower control arms were swamped and there were some minor tweeks which came out of the intensive process employed. The car drove much better as a result of the work but overall, settings were very similar. In both cases data was supplied, without either firm having to be asked.
