Taffy you must have a bit of scotland in you, nothing is free from porsche just a alternative.
Nothing wrong with the clubsport kit, apart from the cage looks like a bolted mess in my car, i am sure i would be glad of it if i turned it over, even if it is a cheaper steel one.
Interesting to see how you get on with the f car, carbon tubs are the future i think.
I agree on the carbon tub and if mcLaren can offer it on all models then i can't see why Ferrari and Porsche don't..The carbon tub is McLaren's USP.I considered a 570S but as i've never owned a Ferrari it was an itch which needed scratching plus i much prefer NASP over Turbos due to lag..I looked hard at 488s but at £180K+ and still depreciating its something i might get next time.On a purely subjective note i think the 458 is the best looking car ever IMO..Nothing wrong with the clubsport kit, apart from the cage looks like a bolted mess in my car, i am sure i would be glad of it if i turned it over, even if it is a cheaper steel one.

The 458 and 570S with identical power and weight and both are relatively under tyred compared to Porsches which makes for a more enjoyable road car.Neither can touch a GT3 on track due to perceived durability..
It’s 50 years since I was only half paying attention to a university lecture on structures. That being the case my recollections on the transmission of forces through joints may be faulty and I would be happy to be corrected by someone who actually knows what they are talking about. That said, effective force transmission and bending moment relies on the members in the joint being fixed in position and direction. Holding a piece of tube to a thin plate with a couple of bolts is unlikely to satisfy either criteria. Calculation of force distribution around the body of a GT3 is more likely to rely on thin plate and shell theory; unfortunately another lecture that failed to attract my undivided attention. So I’m with Yellow on assuming the cage doesn’t add anything effective to the overall stiffness.
The cage on my 991.2 GT3 pings from time to time, generally when going over speed bumps. I have never heard it ping when on track.
The car is Nov 17 and the harness supplied as part of the CS package is only suitable for use with a Hans device because the shoulder straps are too narrow. I complained to OPC and they fitted a complete new Scroth with 3” shoulder straps.
One benefit of a cage is that when touring is that it is quite effective in holding luggage securely, albeit squashy bags only.
Other random observations from the thread.
996GT3 comfort spec a lemon? It must be 10 years since I bought FAB from Hunter of this parish and later sold on to Jack Wood also on here. I don’t think any of us thought of it as a lemon.
McLaren. The Super Series are fine cars and highly rewarding to drive with no lack of driver involvement and to that extent neither better nor worse than Porsche, just different. And if you want an imperfect comparator the 991.2 GT3 is far closer to a McLaren Super Series than it is to a CGT.

Did you buy the GT3 brand new? My GT4 came with 2 optional parts for the harnesses from new, a narrow set for use with Hans and a normal wider for use without. The GT3 should have been delivered with the same.
So my average spec(!) car has arrived at the OPC.
Getting rather excited now. Especially when I get sent this photo.
Couple of bits need sorting on it. Mainly refurbishing the alcantara wheel from all those sweaty journalists hands. PPF did its job on the front end so its really clean. Hoping I can pick it up asap.

I felt the cage groaning when cornering 100% on track as the cage fights with the twisting of the bodyshell...However it would take a much better driver than myself to discern if this groaning is an indication that the cage is preventing the bodyshell twisting over a certain point, or just innocent creaking..
If it did not offer any extra stiffness it would not creak under load in the bends. The fact that it does must = extra stiffness to the chassis how ever small.Porsche911R said:

In no way am i an expert on this subject..My guess is that the rollcage doesn't improve the torsional rigidity of the bodyshell however i still think it acts like a reinforcing brace..Over a certain point of twisting the cage probably has a degree of secondary bracing otherwise it would in itself bend out of shape as the forces would overcome the strength of the cage. All my wild guessing and assumptions..n17ves said:

Yes brand new. A friend of mine also picked up a new 991.2GT3 CS shortly after me. Same issue with the narrow shoulder straps as supplied. In fairness to Porsche the brochure (p 57) also shows narrow straps.JayK12 said:
Let us know how you get on with the 458 and your thoughts against the GT3, will be a interesting read. I love Ferrari's, ex owner, I just love the engines and sound, they do feel like soulful cars. 458 is great fun, if you like NA, go-kart esq handling, it does move around abit, then you'll love it!! Even at lower speeds it feels special.
Agree the 458 is a 'special' car even in Italia form.Pity it is overpriced imo even in today's market.
Biggest issue is it's width for UK B road and Lakeland/Scottish trips etc.
Always feels far less chuckable than a GT3 too.

main thing which puts me off the Performante is how wide these cars are.Pity it is overpriced imo even in today's market.

even the slim 600 lt is wider than a GT3.
people do say how wide the GT3 is but again it's class leading in how thin it is vs others in this sector.
even the baby Alfa 4C is wider :-(

I agree most 458s are probably overpriced at main dealers at around £150K...Mine is much less than this as i avoided main dealers..Pity it is overpriced imo even in today's market.

When are you collecting your new car, looks lovely. Need a lift?
Not sure yet, waiting for a couple of bits to be sorted ahead of collection. I'm hoping before Friday.Taffy66 said:
I loved my GT4 however i never really 'fell' for it and i think in hindsight i felt the engine lacked sparkle over 6K revs..In complete contrast i'm really smitten with my PDK GT3 but only 100% after fitting my new Titanium exhaust,,Prior to this i thought my GT3 lacked soul at sensible road speeds, with the new exhaust it feels exciting all the time..
Hopefully my new(to me) 458 Italia will be delivered before Xmas which will be a much sterner contest for my affection compared to the GT4..I might keep my GT3 long term and if the new second batch RS is emasculated in any way with the GPF i'll keep my GT3..
ETA Its welshman not a welsh man..It'll come to you..;)
