They had me hook, line and sinker with the Gulf liveried 917. hehe

We were flying back from Monaco and then, just a few weeks after, were driving to watch the 24hrs at Le Mans. McQueen is a hero of mine and what more can I say?
How the other half live.biggrin
With regards McQueen, last time i spoke to Richard Atwood i got a good idea of what he was like..Basically he hated fame and only talked about cars and racing non stop.

Agreed, run of the mill TAG Heuer stuff etc. is not the kind of thing real collectors of proper chronographs are remotely interested in. They're just a bit of fun.
Nothing wrong with some funsmile

If you wear a watch for what people might think rather than what it is,is a sad state.
On all my expeditions there was only one watch of choice for reliability with poor weather, low temps and water.
Some watches are rare,very rare.
The later monacos are not cool, just a replica of the real deal, omega produce some great watches.
what is a Rolex then, imo it's a show off default buy now days, there are far better watch's far cheaper !
Just not my bag , but like owing a lambo, I like them but the image is not good.
you cannot even see the time on a Rolex in the sun as they refuse to put anti reflective coatings on them !!!!

I've got a TAG Heuer Monaco which is not hugely valuable, but IMHO looks great and has enormous sentimental value: Mrs and I stayed on a boat in Monaco to watch F1 for our engagement and, in the airport, flying home, there was a Gulf liveried 917 which was, as it turned out, a trap to get you into the TAG shop...

I will wear that on high days and holidays perhaps, so I can see the fuss about a nice watch.
I have a Gulf Monaco but the super LTD ed one,. so price up 25% since I got it.
Monaco's are cool ;-)
Mine's the blue Steve McQueen one. Don't really know what mine would fetch, but as the majority of value is sentimental, that's moot. If I go anywhere where I can't wear my normal scruffs then it's the go-to now.
A man of great taste - mines the same smile

For me, it was the McQueen and Motorsport links (it's called Monaco, but it's a copy of 'the' watch in the Le Mans film) and yes, the looks.

A close second would have been the Carrera. It wasn't until the early 90's I found out about that race. A mate and I were staying in a motel in Vegas and on a trailer, in the car park, was a red 356 with the race places (no idea if on its way there or back) for the Panamericana. The race and the links to Fangio make that watch cool.

I also loved the watched Chopard made for the Mille Miglia too, but they're a bit more expensive again.

The carrera is the tag I have it has the white pearl face and brown croc. leather strap chrono calibre17. Don't like chunky watches with metal bracelets prefer the subtle classic look, not a fan of Rolex either . Anyway had for over 12 years now and just recently stopped working/winding up needs a service as its never had one. Always maintained its value more than what I paid new so happy with that

I started a very small collection back in the early 2000’s:

Omega Memomatic (paid £150 in 2004)
Longines Comet (paid £100 in 2002)
Hamilton fontainebleau Chronomatic (paid £120 in 2002)

The above are now worth approx £5k. Not a bad return.

They get stolen off your wrist these days.
I would not take a Rolex on holiday.
That’s just me though as I don’t dive to 300meter very often ! ....

46MM Tag Heuer Connected is my daily.... three years on, and i still love it... does all i need it to do... tells time, give notifications, looks like a cool watch rather than a gadget. Don't need apps or intercom.

The subsequent models seem less special to me even if they are more glitzy.
I still have one of these early connected watches still going strong. Declined the 2 year trade in they were offering on a automatic mechanical.

Go on holiday somewhere nicer then! hehe

(Which, for the avoidance of doubt, has nothing necessarily to do with how much you spend, or how far you travel to get there.)

If you want a quality watch that won’t attract attention have a look at the Grand Seiko range; can be worn almost anywhere and no one will know what it is. Then for Central London you have the Casio F 91W laugh
