I need to change the discs and pads all round on our 1998 996. is there anything I need to look out for please? Do I need any special tools? do I need a piston wind back tool?

Also, I need to replace the rear droplinks - same questions really, do I need any special tools? Anything to look out for?

Thank you!

No wind back tool as handbrake runs on separate shoes.
All standard stuff as far as I recall, no special tools needed.

Its recommended to change the socket head allen bolts that hold the calliper to the hub. Mine (996.2) are M12x1.5 fully threaded 72mm long excl head 10.9.

Front drop links can be a bi£ch. I ended up cutting the ball off the end so I could get a socket onto it, so could free from the hub - its effectively the clamp bolt for the shocker and they seize. Coppa or allu slip the new one.

When I was doing the suspension on mine I found quite a few bolts are in between the normal spanner selection of 13,14,15,17,19,21. Cannot remember if drop links affected but be aware you may need a trip to halfords!

Get an impact driver to undo the screws holding the brake discs on. Otherwise brakes are straightforward.
Bought drop links but not got round to fitting yet

The lower arm pivot bolts (eccentric) are 18mm AF. I vaguely remember the diagonal link front bolts are too.
