Bore wear pattern
Discussion
Hello,
My 987 gen 1 Cayman S, bought in January this year from a dealer, had an engine rebuild in November 2018 by ECU Solutions of Essex, with a 2 year warranty. It is using large amounts of oil with no external leaks whatsoever. The exhaust smokes on startup but not afterwards. A leak test shows compressed air coming up out of the oil filler cap. Bore photos show an odd pattern on the cylinder side walls which the engineer has not seen before. Can the collected expertise of this forum's contributors help please? I would like to understand what this cylinder bore pattern indicates;
There are four cylinder bore photos showing this pattern. One of them shows oil spotting;

Lastly a photo of a valve seat area shows oil and encrustation;

The engineer's thinking is that the engine rebuild may not have been done properly and that the engine needs a fresh rebuild both of the cylinders and the cylinder heads. I'd be grateful for help from fellow Caymanites about what you consider may be the situation with this engine?
Cheers ... Chris.

Hi, Might be worth taking car to a Porsche 'specialist' such as Eporsch near Woking; they do many Porsche engine rebuilds and have a great reputation, also don't cost an arm & leg ! Sure there are many other Porsche specialists around London who other members can recommend.
Good luck.
Good luck.
would try a call to Hartech on this - knowledgeable people on this and may well have seen this pattern where others would not.
a phone call can't hurt, and if you need a rebuild might be better to go with them than someone who didn't do it right last time.
either way a phone call can't hurt.

If it's honing (which it kind of looks like), it looks very wrong to me. The pic above is honing. What the OP has looks much coarser.
Also, there are vertical marks in the OPs photos.
And that valve looks like it's done quite a few miles for that build up. How many has it done since the rebuild?

You havent come back with what the liner spec was so I guess you dont know.
Looking at the pictures it looks like a coating that is failing due to poor bonding - when it happens in a bearing its due to overload/ fatigue. The replated ? cylinder looks like it has been broken through when honing and spalling due to overstress of the bond.

Does Baz from Hartec still post on here. I’m sure having seen more Porsche engines with bore scoring than most people have had hot dinners he’s the man to ask.
I often wonder what happened to my old 987.1S, that was drinking a litre of oil to a tank of fuel.
Its still going on the mot checker and I would love to know.
Anyway OP sorry I can’t help beyond recommending Hartec. I feel your pain having been stung by a borked Porsche engine myself.

This forum is great! The information and tips are really helpful.
All the information I have about the rebuild is the invoice's description of the work; 1 x supply & fit engine package as agreed (old unit internals unserviceable.)
Since the rebuild in November 2018 the car has done 3,650 miles.
My read of the situation now, after reading the replies above, is that the engine rebuilder likely fitted a used replacement engine and did not repair the original engine. The invoice says "2 years unlimited warranty non the engine."
I'll go back to the dealer from whom I bought the car and start getting the situation resolved.
Cheers.
