All of these discussions just to show 996.2 is the real Mezger performance ‘bargain’ tongue out
IMHO all of the Mezger GT cars are relative bargains. Okay the final run of 4 litre cars is toppy, but they really were pretty rare.

Next rung down, the 997.2 GT3 RS 3.8, for what it is - see other threads on here, where it is compared (by people who own or have owned both) highly favourably with the very latest GT3's - is really not that expensive right now.

Cracking cars. Before i bought my car i sat in a 996.2 at JZM that had just been sold but i wanted the upgrades so went immediately back to my Manthey.

Its not for everyone thou as some want originality which i also get
I must admit I'd normally go for originality.
However I figured with the K400 upgrade being pretty well recognised, having been fitted by JZM, and the buzz and extra sense of occasion I felt on a test run pretty much changed my thinking.
That together with a self reminder that we're only young once, meant that on this occasion I was more than happy to sacrifice originality.

It's not just Manthey. I had to drop my 996 turbo in to Get Speed, just across the road from Manthey for some checks on my first Nurburgring trip. They know their stuff, but the hourly charges are eyewatering.
It's as close to a captive market as you'll ever find ...

There's a couple of pics on page 9, don't have access to any more right now.
I didn't buy it from JZM but believe they had sold it in the past, car originally from Aberdeen and tech is still around who remembers it from 1999.

Ah yes just looked back.

Lovely colour too.

How long have you owned the car?

I've only had it for about 9 months, have covered around 2500 miles including a track day at Silverstone, hoping to do another couple somewhere later this year.
It now has a new pretty cool reg no, which I managed to acquire from someone not a million miles away on this thread thumbup
I've got the new plates but just not on the car yet, will maybe post another pic when all fitted.

It's pretty much track bias as well, but not too bad on the road.
I had Chris at CG give it a good once over underneath after I bought it just for full peace of mind really, all seemed in order thankfully, he did some minor tweaks. I did have an OPC inspection carried out prior to buying it for what it's worth, nothing much really flagged up, although some missing pixels on the radio LCD were actually reported, need to get these seen to sometime !!

We need a Mezger track day meet when this virus thing has blown over smile Maybe an autumn unofficial ‘RS Day’.

I'll settle for fast road personally as track days will be rare especially now as most are cancelled!

Early morning hoons will be the most use for me

Not too bad Henry thanks.
The car does have a small engine oil leak though, hope to tackle that myself at some point - how hard can that be wink

Small engine leak eh? Hope for you it isn’t a core plug!

You say that like it wouldn't be a good thing, I've heard of core plugs in the water jacket but not for the oil system ?? Mind you I don't know much about the GT3 engine.

Anyway not wanting to derail this thread, but I do have a picture here showing where the leak is, this is the offside rear area of the engine next to the exhaust, and I believe it's the oil pump area ??
Seems to me that the leak is from the large flanged pipe, oil doesn't seem to be present above the pipe.
I'm guessing there's an 'o' ring in there, and that the retaining bolts can only be accessed by removing the oil pump ??
Struggling to find a decent engine drawing on line for the Mk1 996.

I could be completely wrong of course, maybe someone with superior knowledge could advise, would be much appreciated.

Core plug would be pretty substantial leak with engine running. £3 part and engine out job, I have the bill to show for it...

Hi,
It is almost certain that the union shown in the photo will be the culprit. The same component started leaking on my 996 Turbo, RSJ cleaned the area and nipped the nut tighter, problem solved.
This was way back in 2014 and the car has been dry since then.

Thanks, will try the union first when I get the chance. Good that it doesn't sound like the core plug at least, just seems to be a very slow drip I noticed on the garage floor overnight.

Doing the exhaust and remap will get you 95% of the way there for probably 50% of the cost.

The earlier Europipe exhaust system that Manthey used (albeit they utilised M&M manifolds even with the Europipe system) combined with the Cup air filter makes for a very unique soundtrack, whether it's worth the extra time, money (and irreversible modification to the engine cover) to fit the Cup filter, remove the MAF and reconfigure the ECU, is a moot point.
Slippy, I’ve gone with ceramic coated stainless steel Fabspeed headers, GMG Motorsport silencers and cross over pipes with HJS 200 cell cats, they came up at a price too good to turn down on 911UK, is it a given that I should go to Wayne S for the remap? Is he still as notoriously hard to get hold of as he was before?
Also need to change the gearbox mounts on it but not sure what route to take, any suggestions? I’ve just fitted RSS engine mounts.

Wayne’s a busy man (as always) the best way to get hold of him is via text, though I believe he has an online booking system on his website now ?

I can’t say I’m a massive fan of the Fabspeed stuff. I’d want to know the diameter of the primary pipes on the manifolds, and the size of the pipes where they leave the merge collectors.
The HJS 200 cell cats should be perfect, and the GMG stuff is reckoned to be good quality too. Though I’d be surprised if the GMG silencers were Mk 1 specific as the Mk 1 wasn’t sold in the US of A, so some tweaking of the tailpipes may be needed to make them fit the earlier bumper possibly.

If you’re struggling to get hold of Wayne, Parr’s did a project car for a 911 & Porsche World feature some years ago. The fitted a complete exhaust and remapped the car on their hub dyno (not sure if they wrote a custom map, or got a generic one from Cargraphic) but the car produced 390-395hp IIRC.
