You could say that of a good many exotic and semi exotic cars Moose, caveat emptor. In terms of CLs I was put off at an early age when my Lotus Elan pretty much unwound a rear during a spirited drive. Don’t like them but hard to avoid unless your specking from new.

An acquaintance of mine has recently sold his (I think it's the one at RPM Technik) and when I asked him why (I hadn't ever mentioned my reasons for selling mine), he said he bought it to replace his Cayman R on the strength of the plaudits the 997 GTS gets and it never really delivered. He's part-exed it for a 991.1 GTS which he says feels more like the grown up Cayman R he was looking for.
The Cayman R is he only car I bought twice and I ran them as daily for 5 years.

My 991.1 GTS lasted 2 months.
It’s not a very good car really bar the engine.

I would like. A 997 GTS , but I did borrow one at launch and did not buy it, so I think there is a little hype on this model, I cannot remember why I was not blown away by it back in he day. But my plans would be a bit mod crazy on it.

Cayman R is a very special car.

As I said in my first post in this thread....the manual GTS is all about the marriage of a six speed manual gearbox and that power kit X51 engine. That is what makes the car together with the lightly firmer suspension (in standard form) than the S. Then for some people they like that wide body rear....which I do.

You can get the S but as a driving experience it doesn’t deliver that top end. It’s a st load to pay for that but there are a lot of people that do...and that’s what Porsche has done across it’s range since the year dot. There are incremental differences that work for some people and not others....same as the Carrera T on 991.2.

Enough about the wheels already!

Had mine on and off twice over the years no problem with the right torque wrench and re grease process. Also carry a collapsible breaker bar that fits in the front that is man enough to remove and refit the wheels without a torque wrench following the emergency process that Porsche provide in the handbook.

Do CL wheels mean every GT3 made since 2010 is totally useless? Not in my opinion.

Way OTT reaction to a wheel nut

Feels similar to reacting to the fact that all 911s from 2004 don’t have spare wheels or run flat tyres. The world didn’t end because of that.

I've has my 997GTS manual since it was 6 months old. High spec. I've driven all sorts over the years when the urge to change comes - Gallardo, Vantage, McCLaren 720, M5, Gransport etc and every single time I get back into the GTS and within 2 miles I think "don't be stupid, what were you thinking about"! It's a bit like trying a new putter. For the first few rounds it feels and looks great, then you miss a few and go back to the old favorite. I've decided it's a keeper. For me it's perfect - analogue steering, short shift manual box, great engine, totally reliable, (relatively) cheap to run and insure and you can get 2 sets of clubs in the back. What's not to like?

6 years in (but bought 3 years old), replaced my 997 Turbo and virtually the same experience (has seen off Maz Granturismo, Vantage V12 and quite a few other options). short shift works like a dream

Thanks all for contributing, little did I know that wheel nuts could be so polarising! :-)
I’ve done the deal, GTS Manual, with the CL, Sports Chrono and alcantara... narrowly missed out on a lovely 991 Carerra T, but really happy to be back in a manual, NA, impractical, unreliable shed

Nice work !

If it hasn’t got the SSK fitted I would thoroughly recommend it.

Will add pics once I collect! I’ll omit shots of the CL for a separate “specialist interest” forum :-)

Kind of amusing that a whole new thread has started on centre locks today. Good comedy timing at least!

according to what I’ve read the GTS has SSK, there is an even shorter throw kit from the GT3, is there one you recommend?

Just off to research Thule roof top boxes, or “CL mobility storage” as I will explain to the kids

GTS doesn’t come with SSK....it was a factory option which my car has. Easily retrofitted though. There are other SSK’s but couldn’t recommend one as have no knowledge of them. If you’ve bought a car with an approved warranty I’d be going with the OEM one.

Correct it was definitely and option but lots of cars have it from factory (mine did). I’ve fitted the OEM set up to a previous 997 and it’s a pretty straight forward DIY job if you want to go that route.
