Hi all good to see the thread still going!

So went back to see the red car and liked it and having a closer look round it - it was still in amazing condition etc.

However, I then started to research more as I was going to make a serious offer for (research went into overdrive!!) and have had a real wobble due to potential PDK gearbox issues which whilst rare seem to be unfixable without a new gearbox at near to £10k fitted.

I note a couple of people on this thread have suggested it’s a brave move running one outside warranty.

The independent selling the red car said they would put it on for a 111 (at my expense) although they warned that its unlikely to be as simple as pay for the 111 plus the 2 year warranty cost. The opc will be very demanding and it will likely end up being £3-4+ k to get it through and warranties which is a lot in terms of the car value.

They seem genuine and knowledgeable so I don’t doubt their experience on this.

All a bit confusing just not sure I want to take the risk as a £10k bill would be horrific
Why do they think it is going to cost you that? The warranty is a little over a thousand for a year.

Perhaps they know that the car is nonstandard; maybe you should ask them. I would personally not want a modified one.

You don't need a 111 point check at the moment for extended warranty...I have bought one today for my wife's Boxster without doing it. Although I believe there is a rule that you need to the dealer to arrange for it before you buy it...you can't buy a warranty until you have had the car for three months I think

I wonder how that works if, after 3 months, you try to buy a warranty and it turns out it has an aftermarket exhaust, remap and Halfords battery.

Don’t know suspect it may be in the small print....I’ll have a look when I get the policy doc from the OPC.

Couple of questions chaps:

Can you get a child / baby seat in the back of one of these? Don’t have a child yet but could be on the cards in the near term.

Revisiting the opc warranty aspect, is this transferable? I had thought I could get the current owner to sort it to avoid the 3 month wait for me being able to. Rang the local opc today who said not and that the previous owner would get a pro rata refund

Your OPC is talking bks!

From Porsche's website (warranty page):

"The warranty is fully transferable providing the car is sold privately or to a Porsche Centre"

Yes, you can get a baby seat in the back.

And yes the warranty is transferable from owner to new owner. Not sure how it works re owner >> OPC >> new owner though.

great thread - hoping to join the fold soon when I complete the purchase of a 997.2 Carrera 2 GTS cab PDK - waiting to confirm a few details before hopefully going ahead.

The comments re the different versions are interesting, particularly the gearbox. A cab PDK will hopefully suit how I want to use the car - it will sit alongside my Vantage V12S (which has the speedshift III box so I'm used to the comments!). I also used to have a 2010 Carrera S Cab and really like it - only got rid to buy the Vantage. The way I'm seeing it is if you want an out and out drivers car a manual coupe is best but if you're more relaxed about the driving you will do and/or its a daily driver then other specs will do!

the one I'm looking at is higher mileage - 69K (not too high for a 2011 car?) but is FSH and looks in good condition so fingers crossed.

interesting re the warranty - it will come with 'a' warranty from the dealer but I think I'll investigate a Porsche one at some point - are there any restrictions re age, mileage?

Love the look of these but hard to justify the premium over an S?

Seems to be £15-20k more for (whats now quite an aged car) the wide body, power kit and possibly CLs.

Feels toppy?

Each to their own. My view is that the 997 is the best 911 ever made and the GTS is the last and best of that iteration.

Looks nice, but no sports seats (not a deal breaker) in stone grey. Price feels high as it's not an ideal spec.

OP, I do not think you should pay for any repairs required to get the Porsche warranty on the car but suspect this is a negotiation to come. The cost of the warranty is over and above their price so I would expect this cost including the 111 point check will be down to you.

As to whether the premium for a GTS is worth it only you can decide but these are cars to enjoy and to my mind the GTS adds a few extra HP (23), the widebody chassis to the rwd version, wheels you can't take off without specialist tools and some trim options.

The GTS is a very good package but i'm not convinced it is worth the premium over a Carrera S but YMMV.

Seems like there aren’t many for sale and there’s only one manual which is a private sale. That may explain why they’re expensive.

The reason I got rid of my GTS cab and have had a break from the Porsche brand. I used the warranty on mine constantly, leaky roof 3 times, rear lights replaced, PDK failure, can't even remember, but it was a list all right...

After my experience of owning 4 Porsches, I would never run one without the warranty. They don't manufacture enough cars to really iron out the stupid issues that volume manufacturers don't suffer from.

So I wanted to get the warranty renewed after 2 years and having put 4k miles on the car pushing it to 43000. Failure of the 111 check due to disc brakes that had 45% remaining (they probably came from the OPC when I bought it with 47%!) and rusty bolts on the exhaust (again, I'm sure they were like that when I bought it), to be replaced by the same stty OEM bolts that rusted in the first place. Cost to repair (just to get the warranty) £4000 plus the warranty cost...

I sold it...

Going to jinx it and mine will explode tomorrow for saying this, but I got mine after 4 owners and only 24k miles and after several euro trips it's on 54k miles, has not missed a beat. And I used to live in London so it was parked on the street for 2 years. Also a Cab, never leaked etc.

Had I had your experience it too would have put me off the brand, I totally get it. But forums seem to only contain the horror stories and give the idea that all cars are bad.

I don't run a warranty on mine, each year we set £2k aside instead. So far I have not touched any of that money.

Had my manual coupe 9 years. Not had any bother at all. Didn't extend the warranty after OPC one expired. Used OPC for service stamps and Indi for consumables replacements. Apart from that just cost me petrol and the occasional litre of Mobil 1!!

Most relaible car I've ever owned.

I've used my GTS coupe more in the past few days. It has become my wet weather car and very good it is too for that purpose.

Every time I drive it, I don't want to get out of it and often find an excuse to go somewhere else. This is after about 6 years of ownership.

I've had 911s for donkeys years and the 7.2 GTS is the only one that has held my attention this long. They are really excellent cars.

We’re the centre lock wheels a GTS option? Keep seeing some cars with them and some not.

Yes.

Most cars have them, but there are some 5-stud conventional wheels around.

As far as I am aware, the CLs offer no actual benefit. But they look nice!

They also make life a bit more challenging with regard to punctures, tyre swaps and the like.
