I love my 997.1 C2

It costs me more than I can afford to maintain but needs must. I bought it when I had a lot more disposable income.

I know of a 20k mile 2005 C2S for £29k. It's being sold by a mechanic specialist who says it has passed the bore scope test. Not sure if they'll give 12m warranty but could be a good buy for someone.
When you say “I love my 997.1 C2”... My wife is always telling me, “You think more of that car than you do of me!” whistlebeer

Yep

Come to think of it, my car quite possibly makes me smile more than my wife does.

Bought mine in 2016, with 50k miles on it, nervous after reading “the internet” and being told it’ll explode any minute.

It ticked onto 150,000 miles yesterday and I’m still saving for a 3.9 Hartech engine, for when it’s needed.

My target is 300,000 miles, but in a Triggers broom stylee.... suspension needs re-doing, then this that and the other.. eventually.

The less you drive them, the more problems appear, I reckon, so drive it more.

Is yours 3.6 or 3.8 ?
I’ve read a little about the 3.9 Hartech thing. What exactly does this entail. Apart from £12K I presume. smile

It’s a manual, 2wd, 997.1 3.8S.

For the 3.9 engine, Hartech’s site has details, I looked at it a while back, so can’t remember, https://www.hartech.org/oversized-engines

Fingers crossed I don’t need it soon, as I don’t have the funds saved yet!

I have the funds in place but don’t want to have to spend it. frown my engine is 3.6 & touch wood seems strong. Usually tends to sound a bit tinny/rattlely at first but as soon as it’s warmed up... superb.
She’s only covered 55k (Reg. 2007) oil change every 3K if I get her to 100K unscathed I will be quite content. But I will expect a lot more miles. cloud9

I’ve just had a quick read through Hartech info on the 3.9 conversion. I will have to find out what the cost of the 3.9 conversion is compared to a standard rebuild with Nikasil cylinders, while keeping the same bore size etc. scratchchin

Has your car still got the original suspension at 150,000 miles?
I tend to read a lot of owners talking about ‘ a suspension re-fresh’ ... and I think, is it really necessary or are you doing the suspension because somebody else did theirs & you read elsewhere that another car had it done or do they have it done for track driving. I would imagine the factory suspension would be good for 150,000 miles at least, under normal driving conditions... albeit most road surfaces seem to be f*cked recently rolleyes

It is on the original suspension. A lot of the miles were on the motorway, so there is some life left in it, but the deteriorating condition of the rural roads in my area are leading me to think it’s going to need attention sooner rather than later.

What are the symptoms, does it go spongy, creaking, car too bouncy over bumps? I’ve never had to renew suspension on a car tbf. scratchchin

Although I had a 996 (86k) the suspension/axle in certain areas and similar to 997 could need replacing well before 150k, I had new track rods, drop links and suspension top bearings (I think) and some power flex bushes on other components, wasn’t that expensive and transformed the car in terms of ride and focus, less squeak and sway, lots more confidence, I do miss it, may need a 997 in my life soon.

The only things I begrudged with Porsche ownership was servicing at the OPC (to keep FPSH) and the prices on really basic stuff like expansion tanks etc, take the pi**

Like Trigger's Broom, there has been a track rod replaced, if not two, i think.

The top mounts are apparently showing signs of needing replacement, but really, it needs an overhaul, at some point, ideally after at least 5 matching numbers on a Saturday - in terms of how it feels, i think it has lost compliance in the ride and feels more "crashy" on poor surfaces, (which would be the bushing, as a start)

So if you’re not buying the car, what’s the other expensive repair?
Since I didn't buy it - it was the cross pipes at the front which I understand to be a £800-£1k repair. Hopefully whoever bought it did so with their eyes open smile The guy who owned it prior to the seller sold it for £12.5k, I'm not sure whether that was to the seller or to the trade, but someone made a decent profit!

In terms of coolant pipes, there are various sets that might need attention. The front cross ones are not too bad, its the rear ones that are expensive as they need to drop the engine.

In terms of suspension, the coffin arms you'll just know as they squeak. The longitudinal arms knock. I've had those replaced. I also did 4x shocks last year, this was due to a small leak on one front one. Man maths meant that, as 2x front ones from Porsche were as much as 4x Bilstein B4s (which are the factory items) I went for all four (plus top mounts and bearings).

Otherwise a lovely looking car. If I was in the market for an engine rebuild car, I would have gone for it......doh! That’s me all over! silly

Have you seen anything else decent? Good luck with it. smile
