Excellent. I don’t think the wing on 996/997.1 GT3s do much, I’ve read about them being designed for ‘zero lift’ as opposed to providing any downforce. Have you noticed any difference in handling on track with the ducktail fitted?
I am no expert on aero....but when I was at Milbrook on the high speed bowl I felt the aero in my 997.1 GT3. The instructor and I discussed how above 100mph you could feel the the car being pushed down into the track. And as the speed climbed it felt more stable above 100mph right upto to 140 which is when I pulled back.
I very interesting and rewarding few days with the Cat D team at Milbrook and then on the open roads. Highly recommend if you want to get to know yourself and cars limits and how these amazing machines perform on and over the limit.

Sport-Auto tests basic lift/drag in the Mercedes wind tunnel at 200km/h.

997 GT3RS 4.0 Front 14Kg, Rear: 58Kg on lowest setting, 0.35Cd
997.2 GT3RS 3.8 Front: 11Kg, Rear: 49Kg on lowest setting, 0.33Cd (not sure why front is lower than NB)
997.2 GT3.2 Front: 15Kg, Rear: 19Kg on lowest setting, 0.32Cd
997 GT2RS Front 14Kg, Rear 35Kg
997 GT2.1 Front 9Kg, Rear 29Kg
997.1 GT3RS 3.6 Front: -2Kg, Rear 10Kg, 0.3Cd
997.1 GT3 3.6 Front ~0, Rear ~0 (they said it was virtually non existent, but not buoyant.), 0.29Cd
996 GT3RS Front -19Kg, Rear 25Kg

Re the aero, my 997.2 GT3 certainly feels keyed into the tarmac at high speed.

A little different to my late father’s 2.8i Capri I hasten to add, which he always said felt a bit ‘floaty’ and ‘disconnected’ at speeds above 110 mph. Happy memories of hitting the rev limiter in 4th gear on the M180 😃

It's amazing the advances that have been made in downforce with the 991 and variants ....

Fantastic data but surely the 996 RS isn’t right? It’s essentially the same wing as the 997.1RS but massively different?

I'm no aero expert either, but my guess is that what you and your instructor were feeling had nothing to do with the car's aero, and everything to do with a combination of these two :

Fulla - I forgot, I did the same course with Colin many years ago. I remember the front end going light around 130 but then settling down again after pushing through towards 140ish

Slippy, I’m having trouble associating your post with the above …. smile are you saying milbrook isn’t a good test because you’re just going around and round a great big circle?

Digga, good intel on the GT3 aero figures. Anything in your little briefcase on 997 GT3 + ducktail aero? Specifically aero balance, would it be a no-no

I’m saying that driving around a banked track at at any speed doesn’t magically conjure up non-existant aero/downforce. Centripetal and/or centrifugal force does however provide the same “stuck to the Tarmac” feeling that aero does … and I suspect our contributor is most likely confusing the two smile

But if Millbrook isn’t banked, I’m wrong !! biglaugh

I always find it amusing when journalists bang on about such and such a new car having double the downforce of the old model and how that transforms it into something that can almost drive upside down on the ceiling. Then you look at the actual numbers and see that two times almost nothing is still almost nothing, and nobody is realistically going to notice 10kg of downforce on a 1500kg car. It's about the same effect as putting a small suitcase or bag of shopping in the boot.

No, not something I've seen any tests/numbers on.

I see, yes we were on the same wave length. How could you not see that I meant “banked circuit” from my use of the highly technical term “going around and round a great big circle”?? wink

All the 997.2 are going... There was a lovely Agate grey not clubsport but had buckets listed last week and was on for all of an hour. Still under Porsche warranty - I suspect it was the same car porsche sold around a year ago. Had about 20k miles on the clock. £110k. Strong money for none CS!

You could buy a 997.1 and get a 500hp engine rebuild for that. biggrin
