I'm quite interested in this for mine and can apply man-maths(tm) to the reassuringly expensive cost if I make the family eat pot-noodles for a couple of months.

I can even live with the cable as it would be useful to charge at the same time, but I am hesitant as I can see Apple (other brands are available rolleyes) totally phasing out wired connectivity within the lifespan I'd expect to get from this (5yrs+) and then you're totally fooked.

Maybe AirPlay in future via a software update? (knowing Porsche that would be a ££££ upgrade too rolleyes)

You will probably be able to attach a wireless dongle to it even if Apple go port-less, but it's a bit of a bodge.

So with that in mind, this would work?
https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-UB400-Bluetooth-C...

it is nano size so would not jut out crazily

Or is there a USB dongle that can fit in and then one can bluethooth through that? I have no idea what I am trying to say but could that work, something like ....

https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-UB400-Bluetooth-C...

....that sort of approach?
Don’t worry it has Bluetooth- so you can stream music wirelessly.

We’re referring to wireless carplay so you can have google maps up on the screen. One of those things thats a proper game changer if you commute in city traffic each day.

Ah yep, I was wondering though if something like that plugged in would then make wireless CarPlay possible.
At this rate I can see NMAutomotive and Joyauto creating something that can be added to it to make it work. They were probably worried on impact of sales, but they could have a workstream here to explore and take advantage of.

Seems bizarre to say I'd buy a sub-prime option PCCM+ and then void warranty by moving the USB port to add a bluetooth dongle to make it half the system it should be in first place. Especially when there are better options already posted on this thread.
I guess that makes me a Porsche fan boy. A bit like those apologists for Elon Musk who defend every daft tweet.
i suppose its the same with wheels, i desperately want to fit 19" BBS wheels but would lay awake in bed at night worrying my spec wasnt OEM any more. Generally i'm game for anything in life but 911's are a bit of an illness.

Simple answer is no. If it's not got wireless Carplay built-in then no amount of third-party addons will enable it.

I said it in the 996 thread back when they released the original PCCM+, but Porsche have really missed a trick here. There are better and far cheaper alternatives available and paying the Porsche tax for a technically inferior product really limits their potential market. For my money, there is no question that an aftermarket unit is the better choice and aesthetically I have no issue with being it merely "good enough".

Thanks for your reply. How so that no third-party addons will enable wireless Carplay on this unit, yet the PCM3 and CDR3 don't have it from factory yet 3rd parties have found a way to make it happen for those. Why those and not this? just curious.

Nobody's making any excuses, they're just telling you that you're wrong. Which you are.

It is perfectly legal to fiddle with your phone whilst it's in a cradle. Whether that's Waze, Whatsapp, or doing the crossword. No law against that at all.

Of course, as soon as it affects your driving, that's a different matter. But the offence is driving dangerously, not fiddling with your phone.
The immediate consequence of fiddling with your phone to WhatsApp or do the crossword is distracted and thereby Careless Driving at minimum. The fact that it's not specifically illegal in the letter of the law just makes morons think that it's fine to do so regardless. Nothing is more important than paying attention to where you're going, and if any driver can't do that basic task they don't deserve a license.

I admit this seems odd to me also - CarPlay isn't licensed by Apple, so if Porsche can enable Bluetooth music streaming, why not the 'full fat' experience? Odd.

No one is disagreeing with any of that. Your insistence that any phone use in a cradle is illegal is what you are being corrected about.

Surely you can't see that screen properly - and why does it need to be within easy hands reach? It's still illegal to use your phone in your car even if it's in a mount.

CarPlay is licences by Apple IIRC hence there is a cost in implementing it.

I’m pretty sure wireless adapters already exist (?’Navplay’) I don’t see why these wouldn’t work on the Porsche unit.

For example

https://nerdtechy.com/best-wireless-carplay-adapte...

(I haven’t tried any of these myself, my £400 BMW CarPlay adapter was wireless out of the box…)

No there isn't a license cost...

'Whether it costs money to get CarPlay support in your car is up to its manufacturer. While Apple doesn’t charge automakers a fee for the necessary software to integrate CarPlay, there are some costs associated with meeting the necessary hardware requirements.'

I think this is rebranded Chinese tech from last generation. I'm fairly sure i read that Bosch supplied all Porsche systems until VW group decided to make their own infotainment rigs in China to fit all VW group products.

Regardless the sat nav graphics upgrade and touchscreen for podcasts will probably be ok for giving me the things i need in a modern format and frankly the current sat nav takes about an hour to programme and often thinks its driving across open fields like the Paris Dakar 959!

Thanks I didn’t realise that, it’s just the hardware cost then.

CarPlay is cleverer than plain Bluetooth btw, it uses Bluetooth to handshake and then generates a Wi-Fi connection which is better quality

I wasn't aware either till I looked it up yesterday. Very surprising given how much Apple charges for little things like cables and adaptors!

The fact that it's 'just' hardware makes your brain melt at the cost some OEMs charge for it. I'm willing to bet the hardware they use differs not one bit from a Ferrari to a Golf, yet one will charge you a King's ransom and the other next to nothing. Bonkers.

My KIA EV6 GT is arriving in a week's time and it also has wired CarPlay only (why?!) so I'm looking to buy an adaptor so I can report back on how well it works.

Carplay2air adapter works fine on our VW and works perfectly - just get in the car and it connects (but is easily hidden in cubby with USB unlike this) so you should be fine
