This may sound a daft question, butI'm trying to avoid 4wd audi's etc - could a 911 tiptronic 4wd be used to tow a horsebox (1 up)? it seems heavy enough, should have good brakes & traction, but is the engine tractable? can anyone suggest a decent nimble small road sportscar which would be more suitable ?

At a guess, no. Even if it was under the towing capacity, you'd struggle to get the towhook high enough.

Where the heck would you attach the towing bracketry on the back of a 911 anyway?

I reckon you'd be better of with a Bugatti Veyron. The W16 should be able to deliver the necessary low down torque.

honestly guys, don't feed the trolls

Anything after about S reg can only have a tow bar attached at factory approved mounting points. I'm quite certain the 996 doesn't have such points so no-one will make a tow bar for it.

How about a 928 ?, factory rated at 1600Kg towing capacity, 320 ft Ib V8 with comfort & handling that would embarrass plenty of current 'sports' cars

How heavy is the horsebox when empty? add the weight of the horse(s) plus the 'extras' and you will probably find you need a towcar with a weight of around 1650kg or more to tow it.

928 could tow ok on tarmac, but you still need 4wd to escape muddy fields - 1650 kg is about ok for towing box with 1 horse.

Not good news really,
especially being a 'live load'
think how much higher the horse would be stood, in relation to you position above the road,

and your car is a rear engine too!

Only once seen a 911 with a tow bar, and read of one towing a speedboat trailer, thats it.

I think if you got in any difficulties at speed 40-50 MPH, that could easilly become really nasty
stopping a bit quickly, not to mention unloading a horse near a nice car
is the trailer a front-unload

You might not want a 'panicky' horse,
clattering down the front ramp near your car.

The pony club morons'd love that at local show,

anyway where will all the tack and hay go?

At least that's a good reason to have a towbar on a Porsche, taking kit with you to a trackday.

That's how it starts.

Next its down the tip with the old fridge in the back,
a quick tow-start before you know whats hit you,

the 'Sprite tourer' is hooked up on the back,
and the caravan club mag has mysteriously, begun to appear,
on the mat monthly.

That didn't quite work.

Click on 'NOS PHOTOS' at the top.

Then click on 'DIVERS'.

On Page 13, there is a Corvette towing a trailer.

And on PAGE 33, halfway down, there ia a 911 towing a caravan!?
